Anyway to Block a Particular User?

Is there anyway to block a particular user from looking at your material? Or from leaving comments?

There is a certain member who keeps leaving unhelpful, spiteful comments on my stories. I tend to just delete them since they are in no way productive, but then the user does it again in the next couple of days.

If there is no way, that is fine. But if there is, please let me know.

P.S.- I tried looking up other threads on this subject, but I'm not great at using search engines. Thus, this.

Nope, not as far as I know. The only thing you could do is turning off comments altogether, but that's not helpful here, because then no one could comment. Even if you were to ask Laurel to disable his account, he could simply return as an Anon, griefing you on and on.

Your best bet truly is to delete his comments and hope he will give up eventually. Trying to talk sense into such a person is a dubious endeavour, because most of the time these trolls just want the attention. Don't feed it.

You can turn off anon comments. In you profile options. Click on No you do not accept anon feedback.

The only way would be to turn off comments, but that means you won't receive any at all.

Just a suggestion, but seeing you delete his comments and he keeps coming back for more why not try leaving them up?

There are different schools of thought on this, but here is mine.

They are trying to upset you. When you delete the remark they know they got to you. They come back, you do it again. They think its funny.

If you leave them you are saying "Yeah, so?" and that's it. What is the worst thing you can do to someone trying to get your goat? Ignore them.

I got 4 nasty comments on 4 stories in fifteen minutes a couple of weeks ago. Same guy. I left them there and there were no more. They are still there.

I am no fun because I show them I don;t give a shit.

What's really funny is when you leave them and your fans call them out for being losers.:D

Just a thought.

As others have said, there's only three options: Completely block comments on a story-by-story basis, block comments universally via your member's "options" page, or block anonymous comments universally via the same location.

All are detrimental to your feedback from users who aren't jackasses.

Some choose to keep deleting the troll comments as soon as they appear. Sometimes that's effective at discouraging them. It depends upon the troll. Some just can't be discouraged, no matter what you do.

Others choose to leave them up and ignore them. That's the direction I trend towards.

Many times, other people will counter the troll when he/she is spouting nonsense, without any prompting from you. That can result in a positive, encouraging readers who might not have otherwise commented to take the time to poo-poo the troll and point out the blatant falsehoods and craziness in the troll's comments. They'll often have kind words about the story in the process.

The one and only thing I would discourage is getting in a war of words with the troll in your comments section.

Just delete the subsequent comments as well. As some point this will irritate the zapper more than it does you.

Another approach: Revel in the attention! Wear the spiteful comments as a badge of honor! Add some of the idiocy to your Sig! I especially like those where the commentor obviously hasn`t read the piece. Pure gold!

I have often debated posting a comment on my LW story saying "You trolls do know all us author's laugh at you right?"

But I don't want to spoil our fun.

You can post that, as long as you get rid of that nasty apostrophe on authors. ;)

Comments from a particular user in which he makes widely inappropriate remarks I usually deleted. Then, my attitude changed. If this fool has all this time on his hands, why not let the world know what a buffoon he is. Leave the comments there, don't respond to them. Let other reads see them and see that he is a complete jerk. Have a good laugh at his expense.

It is most likely he is just jealous of your ability as a writer.

Let him keep wasting his time.

Continue on with your writing and don't waste your time fretting about him. He's a nobody.

So you have a choice, delete or ignore.

Thanks for all the advice, everybody. I'm still undecided, but I'm weighing the possible options.

Again, thank you.
