Votes aren't that important. BUT...

Just to prove my point, before I posted in this thread, I had three "H" stories.
Now, I have only one, teetering on the edge.
I say bring it, Troll Bitches.

Funny you should say that. Since joining this thread two of three chapters in my first story, which were both just above the 4.5 mark, each gained a 2 point vote, exactly enough to lose the red H.

Glad I took a screen dump when there were red dots on most of my main stories, just so I can remember the feeling. Though I mainly did that because I'm actually contemplating submitting a contest story (another thing I swore never to do - and you can call me pussy all you like :).

So I figured if I did that, all my old stories would get bombed anyway. Thus I had nothing to lose by whining here.

The problem is that when an author leaves me a comment, I reciprocate. Posting in LW brought comments from LW authors, which stacked my reading list with stories in a category I don't like. it was a side effect that I didn't expect.

(BTW, if I owe anyone a comment, drop me a line. I think I'm caught up.)

I'll swap a comment with you, if you like. Any particular story of yours, you'd like to recommend ? Or should I just start with Wicked Hot ?

I have 2 that are on the edge barely over 4.5 both slid underneath that mark yesterday and my two stories that were my lower scored took a hit too.

I have no memory of what all my scores are, but many have far too many votes to get pulled down by a couple of bombs, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot did not take a bomb recently.

What's funny is just last night I made a remark to someone via pm that I am convinced that a lot of bombing comes from authors, not readers, and more specifically authors that post or ghost these threads.

So for those dealing out the bombs all I have to say is this

"Jealousy is an ugly emotion"

I'm fond of that one. It's as good as any of my crap, I guess. ;) Let me know which of yours I should read too.

I won't get to reciprocate right away, but you'll be at the top of my list (there is an actual list, believe it or not). This weekend I'm grading midterms, proofreading, and trying like hell to get this valentine story done.

I am working on one now that is going to send them frothing.

My first attempt at really flaming them did not result in as much nastiness as I had thought.

So if at first you do not succeed....

If you're going for maximum effect, the code-words are "cheating wife", "black man" and "submissive husband"... the latter including forced male on male sex.

Wear your kevlar vest when checking the comments... ;)

Stories should do a couple of things here at LIT: Find your audience, and let you know what works and doesn't work.

I don't agree. This is a reading site, not a critique site--and so many authors here are unjustifiably frustrated at reader response because they either don't understand that or won't accept it.

I think Lit. is set up to entertain and arouse--to entertain and arouse the author in writing it and/or the reader in reading it. There is no requirement here for readers to respond or writers to hone their writing skills.

Keep in mind that the audience you want are the folks who prospect for talent NOT the creeps who wanna better wank, and diss anyone who fails to deliver the high.

Why not both?--either separately or together. Did you miss that this is a sex stories site? (Apparently you did, because what you post here is good enough writing, but it isn't erotica.)

See my plan-and what I did in my first attempt- was piss them off by having the husband as the cheat and wife getting some nasty revenge.

I don't need a vest I enjoy pain.

Because why, because you say so?

You make this generalization all the time; that no reader here is qualified to critique a story. Do you know all the readers? Have you vetted them, seen their resumes?

Better yet have you critiqued a story here? I am sure you have and am also sure you feel qualified to do so. So if you are there cannot be others?

Bottom line is you constantly post people here are not qualified because you're stories are not received as well as you would like them to be.

Trust me, there is not a person here who would doubt that if all your stories were H's and you were all over the hall of fame lists and had a bunch of contest wins your tune would change. Then of course readers would be qualified!

Your opinion is yours and no one else has to "get it".

OK.

I appreciate your stance, and I'm so over kissing the reader ass that I decided to strive for whats possible: an audience and a sketch pad to doodle upon, to see. I don't wanna be a lesser PILOT or a lesser LC or a lesser PATIENTLEE. I wanna see what I can do. I prolly have no clue what erotica is, but I do know how lovers fuck each other, pun intended.

Anyone else notice how screwed up the voting system has been? Votes and scores going up and down. My latest came out and I saw it had 53 views, I went in a half hour later and I have 18 views. I had 3 votes, then none, so the system is fubar and nothing is right as far as scoring and views go.

Laurel needs to get Manu to do dome site work and get his face out of her lap. Free or not, show a little pride in the site and make it reasonably workable for scoring.

Just covering the bases.

When you checked those view numbers, were you looking in the same place both times?

Statistics only update every so often, and they're all on different update schedules. Even references on the same page ( category pages, for example ) can show different statistics for the same story in the "recent story" section and the "popular story" section, because each section updates independently.

The only thing that's close to real-time accurate is your private author list.

http://www.literotica.com/members/submissions_view.php

Everywhere else where statistics are available, they're outdated by varying degrees.

As best I can tell, the only stat on your private page that isn't full real-time update is views, which appear to update about every 15 minutes or so.

I'm talking about my author view page. I saw it came out and it had 4 views. I went and checked an hour later and it had 53. I went in a half hour later and it was at 18 and the 3 votes were gone as well. I lost votes and scores on a few other ones as well. I had one lose 2 votes and 3 views and two others go from 4.74 each, to 4.44 and 4.47 with no votes counted.

This site is fucked up big time. The more they try fixing things, the worse it gets.

It seems it's more important to archive hundreds of threads all over the site that have 5k posts or more, than taking care of major issues with writer problems. It is a website for amateur writers, isn't it, not a chat site?

losing views

That's really weird. I've never had that happen to me. I've lost single votes here and there, but always with sweeps. I've never lost views as far as I know. Try a PM to Laurel and see what she says.

Sure, I've lost views in sweeps too. I just took it that there was a list of known malicious voters who got wiped out altogether in a sweep.

Huh. I've never seen it happening to me if it has.

It could be a script that identifies new bots/spiders and removes and excludes them from the view count.

Could be another symptom of the site being behind a cache of some kind for the last few years. I haven't really seen any evidence of that affecting the private author page, but that doesn't mean it isn't. If that's the case, those "lost" views and votes probably aren't lost, but rather invisible for a period of time.

Or, it could be a database burp of some kind. If it is, there's little to no chance of tracking it down without information. It may not be a known issue, and if it is known, it may be something that can't be reproduced easily. Information about where/when it happened, screen shots, and things like that are the way to get the ball rolling. The more the better.

I've tried not to worry about it too much. It's not like I'm going to try to do something about it.

I'm not overly concerned either, but if there's a bug I can provide information about, I'll do it.

Lord knows I've appreciated that sort of help in the past on my own projects. The least I can do is try to do the same when I can. Doesn't matter to me whether anything comes of it. I know I did my part, and that's good enough for me.

You've just convinced me all over again NEVER to submit anything in the LW category.

But I think it's a shame you switched off the voting, because I'm sure that after a while the trolls will get tired of bombing you and go for someone else. Why don't you switch it back on at some point ?

I've switched voting on for humorous-satirical essays like QUEER MARRIAGE (Same-Sex Marriage For Total Morons) and WHAT IS CHEATING? (just submitted, stay tuned for it to go live). I intend to post further incendiary humorous-satirical pieces to LW, pieces that will attract many readers and many nasty comments. With voting turned off on my stories, I won't concern myself with manipulable metrics. To paraphrase my earlier comment, the voting system sucks. I'm just here to have fun.

Queer Marriage was very good. I laughed out loud more than once.
