Another conservative Obamacare myth bites the dust.

But no one will want to be a doctor!

Did you hear how all doctors hate Obamacare and how they are all going to quit and that no one will want to be a doctor anymore cause it’s gonna suck and they won’t make any money and that even though being a physician is the most common profession in the top 1% of earners in America that we’re gonna see the supply dry up and the competition won’t be as fierce and no one who is smart will want to be a doctor and it’s all gonna suck?!?!?!?!

A record number of students applied to and enrolled in the nation’s medical schools in 2013, according to data released today by the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges).

The total number of applicants to medical school grew by 6.1 percent to 48,014, surpassing the previous record set in 1996 by 1,049 students. First-time applicants, another important indicator of interest in medicine, increased by 5.8 percent to 35,727. The number of students enrolled in their first year of medical school exceeded 20,000 for the first time (20,055), a 2.8 percent increase over 2012.

“At a time when the nation faces a shortage of more than 90,000 doctors by the end of the decade and millions are gaining access to health insurance, we are very glad that more students than ever want to become physicians. However, unless Congress lifts the 16-year-old cap on federal support for residency training, we will still face a shortfall of physicians across dozens of specialties,” said AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D. “Students are doing their part by applying to medical school in record numbers. Medical schools are doing their part by expanding enrollment. Now Congress needs to do its part and act without delay to expand residency training to ensure that everyone who needs a doctor has access to one.”

Oh, and by the way, three quarters of applicants had research experience. They had an average GPA of 3.54 and a median MCAT score of 29. Since lots of these applicants won’t get in, the stats for those accepted will almost certainly be better.

I didn't know that there was a steriotype that no one would want to be a doctor. What was the reasoning behind that!?

The medical industry needs to loosen it's strangle-hold. 90% (I made that up, so don't ask me for a link. Scrotes) of what you have to see a doctor for, you don't really need a doctor for.

I get that they are protecting their monopoly, but do I really need an MD to take my temperature and tell me to drink plenty of fluids?

Cool, you can get treated by a med student instead of a doctor.

For all the emotional cauterwauling by the Marines of Literotica, very few people are being forced to switch plans or doctors under Obamacare...just like President Obama said.

I'm amused by how many of the RWCJ change the subject when this is brought up...they haven't been forced to change, they're just oh-so-concerned that other people might have to change plans and/or doctors.

Textbook example of "concern trolling".

I've found that argument a bit odd. Back in the day when I was on a group plan, we changed insurers every year, based on who had the best deal.

That's pretty much the capitalistic system.

I enjoy it here when some bitches about their company changing insurance plans and the Chief or the Coward of Vietnam immediately come in and start bellowing about how its all Obamacare's fault.

We've still got at least until March before true victory can be declared and things aren't off to the smoothest start.

No it's about Obama care my fuzzy friend. Good to see nobody decied to make a hat out of you.

I would but I figure he glosses my posts when he gets around to it. Besides assuming he's telling the truth/the article is accurate there don't seem to be less doctors and you can't claim that there wasn't a meme going around about doctors not able to make enough money were simply going to stop.

Have someone read the thread title to you. ;)

I did. My Mommy says the threat is about doctors. Then she read the article and told me it's in response to an Obamacare myth from the right. Then she wiped my nose cus I haz boogers.

She can't read either, no surprise. :D

It's like nobody has been talking about the Babyboomers for the last five years. There are record numbers of people retiring and will be for a while. Possibly forever after a little bubble.

Of all the potential things wrong with Obamacare, we haven't seen any of them tested yet other than the cluster fuck of a roll out. That's all I'm sayin.'

If I'm not mistaken we've already seen the Lifetime caps and pre-existing conditions roll out but I'm not really arguing with you Hogan.

It took Social Security 60 years to get a functioning website and no one is calling that program a failure....I ain't worried. ;)
