From here:
SAN DIEGO - Same-sex couples in San Diego County and across the state were cleared Friday to get married, with a federal appeals court lifting a stay it had placed on the unions while the battle over Proposition 8 was pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.
I thought it would take longer to get the weddings stopped five years ago restarted, but you can't get much faster than that.

Word to anyone looking to make extra money in CA. Get into some aspect of the wedding business--photos, cake making, planning...I predict a lotta marriages happening this summer.

And if you're writing a story about a gay couple and want them to marry or be married, you can now have any place in CA as a setting (see...this news story is related to writing. And sex ).

Wow! That was quick. Most commentators were expecting the 9th Circuit to take up to 25 days. Less than 72 hours? That's what I call an active judiciary!

In most cases they would wait those 25 days to see if the other side could get the Supreme Court to reconsider, but not this time. Our state A.G. called the 9th circuit to lift the stay that had been in place while the case was pending. The 9th did as she asked and marriage for CA gays is legal once more. :D

Giving the Prop 8 backers absolutely no time to come up with excuses why it should not go state-wide immediately, heh, heh, heh! Well, my church timed it perfectly. We just finished our new kitchen in the social hall. We've got a great place for the reception, a campus covered in roses (thanx to my friend Richard), a gorgeous pipe organ and a (by council and congregation fiat) LGBT-friendly church. Y'all come on down . . . and get hitched.

I'm a native Californio and now happily a resident of another state. For the first time, in a long time, I am proud of something my native state has done.

Well done California.

Mike

Mayor Villaraigosa was on the news about an hour ago marrying two of the Prop. 8 plaintiffs--the first to marry in L.A. since Prop. 8 was passed. The soon-to-be ex-Mayor was very long-winded (campaigning no doubt), but once he got to the actual ceremony, he kept it short and direct. And the gentlemen were clearly on cloud nine, both elated and a little stunned as they stood there in their formal suits, news cameras rolling and flashing, saying their vows and exchanging rings.

I got teary eyed. :cattail:

I saw that. Precious, isn't it?

Even if the official word is that since Ernie and Bert are puppets they have no gender.

And even so, they can still get married now.

But IMO, anyone who cannot put down the ducky is all boy. :D

In the end they all play the saxophone...

No same-sex marriage over here yet, but we just passed some legislation that includes trans and intersex people in anti-discrimination protections. Still some exceptions for religious orgs, but at least religious-owned aged-care places don't get to exclude LGBTI folk.

So, swings and roundabouts.

Active in a good way, yes. Despite the usual Republican complaints, this is one occasion when I have nothing but praise for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
