And elected officials get no more pay/perks than any other gov employee. THAT would be fair...

It's one point I took from the article. Of course, I read the whole thing so that helps. Another point is that more kids are learning to swim. Another is that kids from the local community will be working near to home.

There's lots of points to be made. All it takes is reading comprehension and an open mind.

All lifeguards will be required to pass a lifeguard certification course and pass a swimming test prior to applying to become a lifeguard. And that's just to apply. Again, that's straight from the article, in clear language. All they're doing is taking donated money and sending kids through a lifeguard certification course, the same course required of any lifeguard.

I wonder if they'll dumb down the course and make the test easier. That's how affirmative action usually works. The competitive local swimmers, who are mostly white, would probably be better at the job than somebody who just learned to swim a few days earlier. Unfortunately, that's also how affirmative action works - sacrifice competence in an attempt to achieve equality, and never mind that users of the public pools will be in greater danger than they would have been.

That's not what affirmative action is at all. Affirmative action policies seek to preferentially hire qualified minority candidates to increase diversity IF diversity is a problem. So a police department that covers a Latino neighborhood might want to implement an affirmative action policy in case its police force is all white men. When they're sifting through the pile of workable candidates they've interviewed (meaning they're all cops who have passed the tests and successfully completed the interviewing process), they might want to give preference to certain applicants based on race or gender in order to construct a police force that better reflects the population it serves.

Correct, that's 100% legal in itself. It's not legal if your bidnizz used gender and race as a hiring criteria though. There are a few exceptions like if your company sells black women's hair products you can use race and gender as a core criteria in hiring models to market your stuff.

As a student with sports science qualifications who swam for the equivalent of my state here in the UK, I could go into a whole scientific thing about races and body composition in relation to floating, power, stamina in swimming, sprinting, distance disiplines etc and it all being stereotypes but based on as much fact as men will generally beat women time wise at exact same standard (but there's thousands of 'standards' and only 2 sexes) but whatever I say will no doubt be taken as racist when sooooo not. Fact we are all different as people, from taller people generally having bigger feet and hands or such other connected 'trends'...... bring race into it and everyone freaks out for no reason. Race is no different a 'difference' than height, weight, hair colour, how pointy your nose is!! We're all human and same on the inside.
