Have you ever met a super famous person?

A lot of top singers and musos from the late ‘60s, ‘70s, early 80s (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, et al); lots of jazz musicians from Duke Ellington to Diane Schuur to Johnny Dankworth to Eberhard Weber to Kenny Garrett to … well, you know; numerous film and TV luminaries, mainly directors; a handful of top painters and photographers; and of course lots of writers. Oh, and I once had a long conversation with Rowan Atkinson – except, at the time, I had not the faintest idea who he was.

I've met a few actors: David Schwimmer (who was a total asshole), Jeremy Piven, Johnny Galecki, Kevin Spacey, Casey Affleck, Gary Sinise, Wes Bentley, Nathan Fillion (before Castle, when he was just my hero from Firefly).

Oprah. And I've spent some time with Alicia Keys.

Petula Clark - I was in the studio audience for a talk show where she was one of the guests. My partner and I bumped into her in the corridor afterwards and we had a short chat, she was lovely. Got to hear her say "fuck", although she was quoting John Lennon at the time.

Ian McKellen - saw him at a play ("Dance of Death") and he did signings afterwards. Got him to sign a rainbow flag.

Tim Robbins - caught his band, they were pretty good. My partner got him to sign a DVD of 'Bob Roberts'. If I'd thought of it earlier, I would have brought 'Team America'...

Neil Gaiman - at a book signing.

I've sat at a bar with Dusty Rhodes the WWE wrestler. Big big motherfucker!!! He sat on two barstools.

A good many in the 60s - Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Ian & Sylvia, Joni Mitchell, many more in my Greenwich Village and Peace Movement days. Allen Ginsburg, Tuli Kupferberg, too. An art class under Richard Serra. More lately, mostly politicians and academics. Dinner once with then-PM Jean Chretien.
My favourite was at my high school gf's prom. After the grad dance, we went to a Manhattan night club. As we stood at the bar waiting to be seated, a man came up to me and acted like we were old friends. He bought drinks for the whole party of eight and took his leave. The others in our group were quite open-jawed at the happenings, and one of the girls, apparently quite awe-struck, uttered "You know Tom Jones?" Well, actually I didn't recognize him (remember, I was a folkie), but I suddenly had a great deal of respect and affection for a man who would play such a nice part.

Once I saw Stewart Copeland (The Police) play polo and later at the dinner I sat near him and was able to talk to him. He is a terrific rider--really friendly and a great guy. He put everyone at ease, so that we almost forgot who he was. Later, he played drums with a local band. It was a wonderful experience.

I met Jimmy Stewart at a book signing.

My aunt knew Nell Harper Lee in college and I met her one time. Nell is very reclusive and doesn't meet many people.

List of movies I don't want to see inflight;
Airplane
Airport
Con Air
Snakes on a plane...
Don't forget "Alive." Foolishly, I watched it while packing for a trip to Europe. Imagine my reaction when the landing in Copenhagen was complicated by patches of ice on the runway....

Speaking of wrestling, my sister met Roddy Piper.

Orson Scott Card (my favorite author in the world!) at some point in college.

Rather you than me :) I hear good things about some of his books, but OSC's firmly in my "never getting a cent of my money" drawer...

I'm really glad that the only OSC book I ever read/owned was one I accidentally stole from a library.

Sorry if we're breaking some notions Cookieman, but OSC is a hardcore mormon who likes to spend his book money opposing equality laws for LGBT folks. Even going so far as to create the national organization for marriage, an organization entirely focused on lobbying money opposing same-sex marriage.

Only famous people I've seen... Brother Ali, and Meadowlark Lemon (of Harlem Globetrotter fame)

Both of them were motivational speakers.

My mother swears that she had a 'moment' with Terrance howard. She saw him in New York doing a movie with Channing Tatum (at the time, mom that that Tatum was a woman) and she made eye contact with him.

She said he looked bored as hell.

LUCKY!!!!

I know. He was really funny and friendly, too. Afterwards, we were taking photos with disposable cameras, and one student asked whether he had ever been shocked by the capacitor inside the camera used for the flash. Apparently the student took apart cameras for fun, and assumed that other science-y people would, too, but Bill Nye didn't get it at all and just replied, "No, I always wear rubber gloves when I smash open cameras..."

I watched Pushing Tin on a flight from London to New York. It made the landing at New York a little more interesting that it might otherwise have been.

Famous People I've met

... and in some cases known quite well but no boasting . I'll just name them and we'll see if they're famous in your eyes too.
They are, in no particular order: Jim Harbaugh, . Ruud Lubbers, Mark Harmon, Norman Schwarzkopf, Arnold Palmer and Joe McConnell, They're 'famous as far as I'm concerned at least but looking back I should have put Joe McConnell first. Best of the best he was.

General Schwarzkopf at a Safari Club convention. Tom Hatten for those of you old enough to have watched Popeye.

Tom Harten huh, yeah you're getting up there but I'll bet you the proverbial $5 to a glazed donut that I'm 15 years older than you. I wish I weren't and it's not a matter of complaining ... there's not much I can do about have been born too long ago.

Hey, so long as you're still around to complain! I read the paper every morning with especial attention to the obituaries. If I'm not there, it's a good day.

That's unfortunate. I knew he was Mormon but hadn't kept up on his political views. I guess I'll just borrow his books from the library.

I knew a man who shoulda been famous. His name was Bill Blackshear. In 1965 he ran for city council and was elected. The first black elected to anything in Florida in a century. He whupped 6 white men for the job. I worked for his shoe-string campaign.

Bill was a Korean War vet, an electrical engineer, married, and active in our towns black neighborhood (called THE NIGGER QUARTERS back then). People knew Bill, and they knew he was superior to the white candidates. My mother volunteered me for his cause.

He lasted one term and bought a newspaper. One term was enough for him. Too much corruption.

Oddly enough the local liberal rag always forgets to mention Bill Blackshear when theyre crying about the poor ol niggaz and the mean ol crackaz who kept em down. Crackaz aint fools and know a decent man from a thief, and we elected Bill.

I met the Beatles in 1965 when they were doing the photo shoot for the EP "Nowhere Man" in Chiswick Park.
