I'm compiling this list specifically for authors new to Literotica, especially those who fret over comments and scores. Maybe I'll clean it up and post this later as reviews/essays. Idk. Let's see how this goes.

Feel free to criticize or add your experience while reading/writing in various categories on Literotica.

Hopefully, someone agonizing over their scores finds this useful.

I'll start with the (in)famous one: Loving Wives

There's little love for cheating wives, cuckolds and redemption themed stories in Loving Wives. The most vocal commenters and voters are, almost always, toxic and vile. Expect a few comments to be about self-inserting readers who would've done a better job if they were the protagonist.

There's also a significant commercial market for this genre. People who like reading these categories are just as many as the haters - maybe not as vocal. They pay good money for complete works.

So, if you're someone who enjoys writing these sub-genres here, keep a few things in mind:

Loving Wives, as a category, gets a lot of views compared to its sister categories like Group Sex or Fetish. If you're thinking about submitting in a different category to avoid the toxic crowd, think twice.

More views means more potential followers. More followers means if you ever decide to sell your work, these humble perverts will be the first buyers of your work in a saturated market.

If you have a thick skin impervious to insults, submit in Loving Wives, regardless of your decision to monetize your stories.

But if you're someone who prefers peace and quiet and don't mind the occasional tumbleweeds in the comments section, you can skirt the rules and post in sister categories like Fetish and Group Sex. Less hate and vitriol, but also less engagement.

You're free to choose.

There have been authors who posted well-loved stories like Requital and The Private Party, but their scores hover at an average of 4.50-4.55. There's a higher scored Katie's Massage (4.66 as of today) which is also one of the most read stories on Lit at 4.6 million views (I personally think older stories [circa 2000s] are more immune to 1-bombs as the 4s and 5s they've accumulated all these years offset any malicious votes)

Edit; There was also a story in the Erotic Couplings' Hall of Fame about a married woman sleeping with her coworker. It received a score north of 4.85 and a lot of positive comments. Unfortunately I can't find that story or its links anywhere. This shows a good story will receive attention regardless of its category.

Anyway, here's a meme to sum it up:

Avoid any kind of sex scene in non-erotic. I know the category is meant to be less focused on sex but it does say ‘Non-Erotic Sex Stories’ and this is a porn site. I assumed a light sex scene that ends before it got too erotic would be okay. I was wrong.

The first time I did this is the worst rated chapter in my series, which is now on chapter 42. The clean readers punished me. The next chapter was rejected by mods for a similarly mild and brief sex scene.

Are people agonizing over ratings? I don’t believe many are agonizing. Are they irritated that one-bombers knock their scores down? Sure. I have that problem too. You need seven fivers to offset a single one-bomb to maintain the 4.5 rating. There’s nothing we can do about that problem but that doesn’t make it less frustrating, especially when you know these pathetic cucks aren’t actually reading your work.

That said, having avoidance guidelines for categories is not a bad idea. I wish there was a soft porn category. That’s where my work would fit best.

I think Romance tolerates soft porn. Many of the Hall of Fame stories aren't erotic. It feels like a story with sex inserted as afterthought. There aren't any memorable stories that are remembered for their smut as much as they're remembered for their plot.

A non-erotic/soft porn romantic story should have more plot and comedy/tragedy to keep the readers from noticing the lack of smut.

I agree with the analysis of the OP's comment, but not the title of the thread, because of its use of the word "should." The post itself is more open-minded. I think it's better to say "Here are things to be mindful of" (which is what the OP does in the opening thread) rather than "Here is what you SHOULD do" because there is no "should"; it's just a matter of knowing the pros and cons of doing certain things in certain categories and making mindful choices.

I have a high tolerance for negative comments and getting downvoted so long as I feel like the story is getting enough attention and consequently getting readers who like it and sometimes favorite it. It's a perfectly valid alternative to a focus on doing only what will yield the least negative feedback and negative scores in a given category.

Anal in a Mom / Son incest story.

Apparently this is huge no no.

Perfectly fine to fuck your own mother.

But butt stuff is icky.
Did you try having her peg her son?

It's disrespectful of the relationship with and status as family members. Or some other tripe.

Also, impregnating your mother or sister is hot, 5 stars. Butt stuff, 1 star.

I'm truly tempted to write one where all mom and son do is anal.

Tentative title: Nothing But The Butt For Mom
She vowed she'd never make a cuckold of her husband again, but she swooned every time she got a glimpse of her son's third leg, and convinced herself that it wasn't cheating if she only opened the back door for him. The long car ride to [wherever] would be the perfect opportunity.

Is there a way this story could be simultaneously posted in Incest AND Loving Wives?

It would be amazing to see.

So, to sum it up for Incest/Taboo:

Impregnating your family is fine as long as there's no butt stuff between Mom-Son.

Chiming in on the note of people are free to write whatever they want, and there's no hard rules here. But if you someone who cares a bit more about score or avoiding nasty comments, here's a few pointers.

Non con in incest does not do well.

Also, for an extreme kink, a faction of the crowd there gets weirdly moral over drinking and smoking weed.

Unhappy endings in romance-especially if they come out of nowhere, like suddenly after finding love, someone dies.

Reconciliation in loving wives. if you do this people will not only destroy you, but some will then write different versions of your story without permission.
