You know the thing is that God is not the cause of that. God gave each of us the ability to live our lives like we want. Not like he would have it. We have choices to make and some people make the wrong choices. I agree there were bad things done in the name of God but not by God. There are also good things that are done in his name but those things are swept under the rug.
He may not be the cause but if he was truly omnipotent and if we are truly made in his image then he is willfully ignoring suffering pepetrated in his name and as reflections of him we provide insight into who he/she truly is (if you accept God exists, of course).
That's what I choose to take from the Bible. Same words, diff. interpretation.
Christianity has split into a gazillion branches based upon intepretation of the good book. Who's right, the Catholics or the Protestants? The Jehova's Witnesses or the Latter Day Saints?
Abraham as observed by a Muslim or Abraham as observed by a Christian? If so, which Christian observance of Abraham is the correct interpretation, the Mormon, Methodist, Quaker or Amish one?
Will an Amish believer go to Heaven because he doesn't watch TV? Will the orthodox Russian Christian burn in Hell because he does?
Was David Koresh right? Maybe the Branch Davidian interpretation was right and all of the pious, zealots, secure in their own interpretation are going to Hell?
See the problem?
If none of that matters, then why not take a sabbatical (pun intended) from Christianity and take a spell in a different religion each year?
You might broaden your horizons, be less closed to other Faiths and the world might truly be a happier place in the name of religion.
