The Official Author's Hangout Halloween Contest Support Thread

Surprise!

Yes, I'm poking my head back in here after another absence (eight months this time, I think).

My Halloween competition story went live on Saturday - just in the nick of time!

It's a tale of an unquiet spirit and revenge for past wrongs.

I'm working my way through the other stories entered in the competition, reading, commenting and voting, but I don't know if I'll get through them all. One hundred and fifty-something is it, now?

Happy Halloween, all, and may your goolies never funk out!

Contest analysis - 2012 Halloween Contest

Good evening. Another reality tells me that there are 153 stories in the competition to date, with an average score of 4.19 from an average of 168 votes. Stories had an average of 18,747 views, an average of 6 favorites, and an average of 6 comments. The average ratio of votes to views is 0.97%. The average number of pages is 2.9, with the longest story being 15 pages.

So far there have been a total of 25,625 votes, 2,868,387 views, 967 favorites and 1,057 comments.

The standard deviation of scores (from the average of 4.19) is 0.39 and the standard deviation of votes (from the average of 168) is 195. The median score is 4.20, the median number of votes is 90 and the median number of pages is 2. The top 25% of scores are 4.46 or above and the bottom 25% of scores are 3.96 or below.

Sweeps

Some votes have been reduced (swept) since the start of the competition. A total of 99 stories have had their votes adjusted, with 111 sweeps resulting in a new score that day which is higher than before and 19 sweeps resulting in a new score that day which is lower. There were a total of 635 votes swept, being an average of 6 per swept story. The maximum number of votes swept for a single story was 76. (Figures based on toplists, and may not be totally accurate).

Disclaimer

Because of the way this site works these figures will not be totally up-to-date. For a given story the score shown on:

  • The category page
  • The author's page
  • The toplists page

can all be different.

Also it appears that various pages update at different times of the day, sometimes quite infrequently.

Please do not PM me asking for more detailed information. I do not wish to skew contest results by giving a target for voting manipulation.

Contest page: 2012 Halloween Contest

My story has been getting swept fairly regularly over the last couple of days.

And the sweeps apparently not only target the contest stories, because I've seen at least one vote disappear from each of my two (most recent) stories. Not that it made any difference in the average score, so I don't think they were 1 bombs or an unusually high score.

No complaint just wondering why I would even get an 'illegal' vote. I mean most of the legit readers at Lit know they can only vote once, don't they ? And if a story is not in a contest nor being a threat to anyone's position scorewise or attracting trolls any other way, well what would be the reason / point ?

Though I suppose I should be grateful if all I ever lose is one vote pr story :) Just hope it's not one vote pr every contest !

Anyway congratulations to all those who managed to submit a story and have a fun and/or scary Halloween.

yes our dumb, racist texan is making even the babies cry…

The following is post # 1104 on the a.i.r. contest support thread. He also posted exactly the same thing in posts #1001, 1004, 1008, 1010, 1012, 1015, 1022, 1024, 1026, 1030, 1034, 1044, 1046, 1051, 1055, 1061, 1065, 1068, 1075, 1076, 1078 and now 1104. The same post EIGHT times on the first page. FIVE on the next page! SIX on the third page! TWO times on the fourth. Now he’s started on the fifth page. The same post 22 times. He's now up to 235 times posting the same thing (unless I’ve missed a few). Mind you this isn't a record for him.

So unfortunately I’m forced to share his disgusting posts on this thread. There are no free rides for enablers. Sorry…

are these three old babes enabling hate in AHland? Why? Do they get off on hate speech?

Why would our tiger lily threadmistress stand with the hate-mongerers? Simple jealousy? I guess the a.i.r. thread has been making hers look bad...

post #1104 on the A.I.R. Contest Support Thread. Let's all look at our AHland racists posts. We're prepared to expose him for what he is...sad really...

Poor, poor scouries, if only he knew what an idiot these posts make him look like. He's just making sure even more people know that his contests are fake.

Perhaps one of your readers voted twice by accident? That is, they read it and voted then forgot they voted and voted again. During previous contests my not-entered stories have lost votes, not many but some. I don't think the system is foolproof, but then what is?

I was thinking that your most recent stories might still be eligible for the monthly contest? So, for that reason, votes that are deemed to be ineligible would still be swept? I don't know, I'm still a rookie here, myself, but it's just an idea that occurred to me.

real scores ... not darkboy aka sunnysea lies...

LITEROTICA CONTEST VOTE TOTALS STILL LAGGING!!!

The LITEROTICA Section of the contest VOTE TOTALS heading into the final week are now available. Only about 20% have received enough votes even to be eligible for the A.I.R. section of the contest. Another indication that the reading public hasn't been very impressed with the quality of stories submitted.

However we finally got our first 1000+ vote story which is a relief.

Updated vote totals now available on the A.I.R. support thread.

Argh. So either I picked up a couple 1-bombs today (my score dropped .02 from this morning), or I had a couple of illegitimate 5's swept from my score... Can't complain about how it's going regardless, but I really hate not knowing which. :/

You might be right. I don't pay attention to any of the monthly contests; I just assumed they don't run any longer. I do remember some of the older people on the site - okay, okay, some of the more experienced people on the site - discussing votes being removed from non-contest stories in the past.
Sorry to hear you lost a little on your score. Mine's gone down, down, down and then bounced up a little. It's sitting about in the middle of the pack fro horror right now, which I think is pretty good.

I just posted the following as a post on the bashful ones latest story. I have nothing against the author but I do believe that authors who recycle characters (a la Pauletta) in Themed Contest stories are not playing fair.

One commenter wrote: "Love the way you are using your original cast in new stories and plots."

I beg to differ. I believe contest stories should be original works that do not trot out characters, plots and locations from older stories. I believe it gives your story an unfair advantage over the 100+ other authors who entered the contest.

A LITEROTICA themed contest story should be a totally original story - not one of these tired serial/chaptered works that tries to take advantage of your previous stories audiences. I ask you to play fair.

So, how many original characters have you written in the last year or so? As I understand, you can count them on your fingers while wearing boxing gloves.

My story has been drifting back and forth the same .02 points for a couple of days now. I may have had a sweep to as well, seems like the last time the score drifted up the vote total was down. I think anyway not like I memorize or write down the totals when I look

Dear "Jacqui" or Scouries or, really, anyone interested:

Feel free to contact Laurel and raise your objections. I haven't corresponded with her on the issue, so as far as I know she may agree with you. However, I imagine that the readers who recognized several characters in my contest story from previous works (none of which are necessary reading material to follow or enjoy my entry) would have read my entry and enjoyed it, anyway, because they've already found that they enjoy my stuff in general.

All of these recurring characters play supporting roles. They do not play the lead in the story. The contest entry works just fine as a stand-alone piece. But, again, if you object, please raise it to Laurel. She's the one who sets down the rules.

You're good. I had five separate stories with mostly the same cast of characters entered in a Winter contest a couple of years ago and didn't hear a peep from anyone.

The only complaints I get are about my ongoing series featuring Pauletta. And, even then, the only one complaining and trolling the stories is you-know-who. :(

In fact, I get a lot of feedback asking me to write more about some of the characters who are in ongoing series. :)

Actually, my score has been hovering around the average for Erotic Horror as well. I'm always pleased to be at 4 or above.

To tell you the truth, I've entered these two contests to gain exposure to more readers, which is really the thrill of writing here in the first place for me. I haven't really "felt" either one, and I don't much like writing on spec. As I've said somewhere around here before, the one contest I'm really looking forward to is the "Nude Day" one.

So this is interesting.

My previous 3 mother/son stories all have over 1500 votes (one with 2000+ my summer entry) like most stories the majority of the votes come in the first week.

My contest entry alos mother son came out last Friday and is still shy of 500

I had a new Mother son story come out early this morning and it is already closing in on 500 votes so on pace with the others.

So I'm the same author, putting out the same type of stories with all the same numbers exceopt for the Halloween entry.

Very interesting. Makes me wonder.

Very interesting. Makes me wonder.

Yeah, that is actually rather strange. One would think that your regular fan base would read the story even if it is in a contest. Then added to that would be the people reading contest stories. And according to Sun's data the weekend is good for viewings, so that makes it even more inexplicable.

Oh well still a few days to Halloween. Hope you get more views (and votes) over this weekend.

You were correct. Not sure what time it went uip, but only knew because at 10:45 I got an e-mail from lit feedback.

It's not like I had hopes for it anyway, but you do lose a lot of votes with those extra few hours. Good news is its Friday so I should get a lot of weekend traffic.

Couldn't part of the reason it doesn't have the votes you anticipate be what you've already point to? Perhaps a lot of readers in your fan base have just missed it being posted.

Do you happen to know where on the new story list it came out?

That might have a lot to do with it. Being close to the end of the entry period it might have missed the top spots.
