They've run the numbers on it, and I think it said that if we had the same growth in government workers that we did the first four years of the Bush administration, the unemployment rate would be close to a point lower.

Considering the austerity policies of the last two years (the drop in government employees is part of that), the new numbers are pretty good. You'd have to be pretty damn unpatriotic to complain about them, that's for sure.

One reason the rate was a good deal lower this month is that they had underestimated the number of jobs added the previous two months, which is an interesting oversight considering dumbass Miles's conspiracy theory.

The method for calculation is not the most scientific but it has been more or less the same since 1945. "They" are only following the definition of the calculation of unemployment when they drop the disenfranchised worker out of the denominator. Look at recent history - the 10.8% unemployment in November of 1982 reached 5.3% by Nov of 1988 in significant part to removing those who gave up looking. Just remember that a big part of that is people taking early retirement and those moving to underground economies (the house keeper paid in cash, the day laborer, under the table wages etc) which is estimated at appx 10% of GDP. That is $1.5 Trillion in economic activity. So they are dropping off the measure, but they are also still working and generating economic activity and paying sales tax, gas tax and other use taxes.

And, no. It means that if Congress was a functional body working with the executive branch we'd have a smaller government, with modest targeted tax increases, a plan for balancing the budget over the next 4 years and far less projected debt which would reduce the uncertainty of the markets and bring in 2-3 Trillion in private equity investment that is sitting on the sidelines waiting for the outcome of this election. And they are more looking at what is going to happen in the Senate and House then the White House.
