Americans Rate Public Schools the Worst Place to Educate Children

A new Gallup poll released today indicates that Americans rate public schools the worst place to educate children.

In the national survey conducted Aug. 9-12, private independent schools, parochial and church-related schools, charter schools and home-schooling all rated higher than public schools.

I wish they would have asked the parents what type of school they send their kids to and how they rate that school.

How can anyone rate Home Schooling as excellent when it is absolutely dependent on the parents' abilities and knowledge?

They did, read the poll results at Gallup.

But American parents are always far more positive when asked to rate their own child's school -- with 75% this year saying they are satisfied. Seventy-five percent of public school parents are also satisfied with their child's schooling.

Every parent thinks, no matter their abilities, they can teach their child(ren) best. I know a woman who never graduated high school, she home schools her daughter, who happens to be the smartest girl her age I know and Mom would have made a wonderful teacher, if only she had the papers needed to be.

Then there is another parent, male, with a 4 year college degree who tried to home school his son and gave up after six months. Not that he didn't know the material, he just couldn't get his head into teaching mode. He was a doer.

So it just might depend on how willing you are to stay a step ahead of you child's needs.

Public or private school isn't dependent on the abilities of teachers?

To a lesser extent. Teachers will have at least studied their subjects to degree level and will have to stick to a recognised curriculum.

Which they teach in 40 minute blocks as determined by some MBA who studied "human attention spans" in a 4 hours workshop.

The books are the same, the methods are the same and the kids still have to pass an equivalency test or be placed in a regular school.

I think the advantage I had was being able to concentrate on a single subject for the entire day rather than trying to meet a standard for rest periods, food periods, social periods and class time.

And do you think someone like Garbage Can or Retardinflorida would be just as good at teaching their kids?

One of grand daughters was home-schooled, graduated at 16, and was Phi Beta Kappa at University of California, Davis. Her brother is a jock and opted for public high school to play football.

During most of my professional career I spent time in schools spread over 5 school districts. Catholic and private schools are well organized and sedate, public schools tend to wild and crazee mayhem. Kids dont do well when the lil Nigga basterds is sittin atop the computer monitors or running wild around campus. But we asked for what we got, and we got it good and hard.

It's all dependent on the quality of the individual teacher. And excellent (and horrible) teachers can be found in every school and every home.

I twice pulled my son from public school and home schooled him because no matter what plans or programs or supports are in place, and no matter if it's all printed and signed in a legal document, if the teacher in charge of the class doesn't understand or disagrees with the plan, then it just doesn't work.

My son has had exactly two wonderful teachers in his seventeen years of schooling. (Not counting me, of course.) That's pretty sorry.

But it's too easy to blame public schools for all their failures. After all, they get all the kids that have parents who don't care. Those kids don't end up in private schools for obvious reasons, so public schools end up getting blamed for bad outcomes due to societal problems that are largely outside their control.

I agree with your basic premise. It should be easier for public schools to kick out kids that prevent the other kids that want to learn.

Oh, and there's one other thing that public schools get that greatly impacts their expenses: they get the special needs kids. Tons of potential that come with lots of upkeep. Many get their own aide - a paid employee dedicated only to them. Not only that, but if parents choose to send their special needs kid to a private school, the public school must still provide for the child's special needs.

Look, Everybody keeps saying America needs to catch up with the educational accomplishments of Japan, France, Britain, etc. -- well, those countries have highly centralized national education systems. The French have sometimes boasted (with what accuracy I cannot say) that on any given school day, for any given school grade, the Minister of Education knows what page of what textbook every student in the country is reading from. That's what works, apparently. What proof is there that homeschooling can match the results?

I googled home school vs public schools and found many articles that said one was better than another. Granted I'm not spending hours of research but there doesn't seem to be any proof that one is better than the other. Not that I couldn't find an article that said they have proof that one is better but could just as quickly find an article to prove the other one is better.

While I criticize public schools, I don't think it's the teachers fault. That said, there are teachers who are really not qualified to teach. Even when I was in school, there were teachers who really didn't teach. I could tell stories, but this isn't the time or place, let's just say those teachers...never mind on that.

There are any number of places that a finger could be pointed as to why public schools are lacking. In my opinion you should always start at the top. How big does the DOE need to be? How many administrators are needed to make sure teachers...well do their job. And why can't you get rid of bad teachers? The tend to give all teachers a bad name.

Is it the Administrators? Is it the culture of the teachers union? Not only can the teachers union, and I'm not saying all teacher agree with the union, but to keep their jobs the do have to pay lip service, hold your children hostage, they hold the taxpayer hostage.

Now don't get me wrong. I believe teacher are woefully underpaid. I do believe there is enough money funneled into the Education system to pay them more than they get now. Should an administrator be paid more than a teacher? Why? I don't have an answer to that, except one sits behind a desk and deals with stuff, while the other teaches our children. I would vote that the teacher be paid more than the person who only has to face stuff. And the reason I say this...I know what a teacher does, faces and has to put up with in the classroom. I don't know what an administrator does, except attend seminars at taxpayer expense in exotic places like Hawaii.

It's too bad only a small portion of the billions of dollars allocated to education get to the teachers and the classroom.

Special Needs=Niggaz

A teaching degree is about the easiest degree to get. Teachers work around 200 days per year for lots more money than most people make working 250 days. In my county teachers make a lot more than cops.

Special needs = old, aging, obsolete racist shitstains taking up space, plus their enablers

Not always? Seriously?

Problem reading? What? So you're pissed if I agree with him or if I don't. Guess you just don't like me. No skin of my nose. Hate me all you want. I'm used to liberals hating me.
