The simple answer is taking more than we need. Well you don't need that soda and chips while others are starving do you? Bought anything new to replace the still functioning item? Is that greed because you didn't need it? Gone on vacation while there is so much need in the world?

This is a serious question because I hear the word greed tossed around so much. I am really wondering if someone can define greed.

Its an obsessive appetite to control what you have no use for.

The want of more, beyond your need and without reason! the selfish need to amas more and more wealth land etc!

Hmmm...well, I eat like a bird, yet will take anyone out to dinner at the drop of a hat...and pay for it myself.

I don't really go on vacations because flying terrifies me.

I do give tons of money to my parents. They are both 74, retired and doing their own thing.

They are my hobby where money is concerned. Neither of them are wealthy and I know they appreciate what I do for them.

How can I not...they are great, loving parents and I'm only giving back what they've given me.

---this post was actually interrupted by my dad, calling to invite me out to dinner with them.

This is why I do the things I do.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely treat myself from time to time in ways that mean a lot to me.

I also donate regularly to a few causes.

Helped many friends out over the years.

Criminy, sounds like I'm running for saint here or something. I'll probably be lashed for it, but I'll hit that "send" button anyway.

pfft. Life is good folks. No matter what your situation, it can be whatever you want it to be.

Rolling over and falling asleep after you're done without so much as a thank you.

:p

You have a good heart. Are you being greedy when you treat yourself? No, but it is taking more than you need. Bless you for taking care of your parents I did the same thing and also treated myself. My real point greed is in the eye of the beholder.

I don't like to be critical...but those are the weirdest feet I've ever seen on a woman.

I have to admit I never got that far down. So I'm not being greedy I am helping the foot impaired. This is a valid argument (not really) that has been used in one way or another.

greed   [greed] noun
excessive or rapacious desire, especially for wealth or possessions.

So according to the dictionary definition you don't have to have it already to have the rapacious desire for whatever it is you want.

My definition: Wanting what someone else has.

I would say it would being jealous of what someone has. Meaning, I work hard for a living, I put in my 40 hours a week, I pay my taxes and am an honest fellow. If you have more than I have you must have lied, cheated and stole to get it.

Hmmm...good personal definition. For example, I have seen things that other people have and wanted for myself.

However, I have never felt "deprived" and actually admire THEM for having it.

Wow, Greed, want, desire all fall into many different categories.

I wonder if anybody has ever dug into this and laid out a scale or something.

I remember once being intrigued by a defining categorization of the different types of "Liars".

Hm...an interesting thread this turns out to be for me.

Greed is when you're okay with hurting others to get what you want.

Would you consider eating chips and soda and going on holiday hurting others and greed when that money spent could have helped them? Maybe I didn't hit specifically what you buy that you don't need but I think you get my point.

Absolutely, Ellie. But bring it up a few notches. What do you do, for example, when out shopping with a friend that you know has little money.

Does one buy whatever they want and also pay for items the friend likes? Or go hog wild buying whatever they like and leave their friend standing empty-handed at the counter.

See what I was saying earlier about different levels of "Greed".

Somebody really needs to set a standard here. I try to be generous. But sometimes I wonder if I should be doing more than I am...or doing more than I should.

You have really brought up the essence of my question. When I spend money on something I want but don't need I justify to myself that it's important to the overall happiness of my life and it's OK. When someone else spends money on something I don't approve they are greedy. We all spend money on things we don't need. Aren't we all greedy?

Greed is when you're okay with hurting others to get what you want.

Example: ObamaCare, where there is a multitrillion dollar price tag, the economy is in the toilet, and people will have to give up food, clothing and shelter to buy it because some greedy socialist bastards hid themselves in a room and forced it on an entire country...

I for one did not expect Coach to come post in a thread about greed and somehow reveal more of his butthurt.
