What is the proper short term for a dominatrix? I am writing a story about a D/s lesbian couple, and I want to use the right terms. I have seen both used, but which is preferred? Are they both pronounced the same?

If the dominant is femme, she might call herself "Domme" or "Mistress"

If she's butch, she might call herself "Dom" or "Daddy."

Yes they are pronounced the same.

A "dominatrix" is a woman who tops for pay. A person who does it for love is a "Dominant."

Yes, for the love of God, the word is not "dom-may."

/pet peeve

IF (and only if) one wanted to sound French, one could linger jussst a bit on the "m" sounding, but not like mmmmmmm or you'll just sound stupid. ;)

I thought it was Domm-ee (long e sound)! That way they sound all cute and adorable :p

Hah! I did not know that!

I thought it was just a feminine form (like executor/executrix).

I learned something - on a Saturday! (It is Saturday, right, Stella?!)

Oh, fuck-- I'm not even sure anymore!

You can tell it's not a feminine form because nobody goes to visit a Dominator.

Well, thanks for your input. I won't use the short form at all, but will refer to the one woman as a dominant and the other as a sub. Neither woman will use either word in the dialogue and, when I mention the relationship of the dominant to the sub, I will refer to "her mistress."

I don't know how soon I will finish it, but the name will be "Black Dominant." The name and the story itself will probably piss some people off. :D

I know jack shit about French (we do Spanish 'round here, and I know precious little of that), but I do know you don't say "omelet-tay" or "croquet-tay" or "mouss-say," so I can't imagine why you'd pronounce "domme" that way, LOL.

Also, "dom-may" sounds way too much like it's veering in the direction of "dummy" for me to be comfortable with it, even if it were the correct pronunciation!
