Thanks to Fox News and Hate Radio constantly insisting that "the Negro President is coming to take your gun", gun sales are at record highs in America.

Somewhat paradoxically, the number of households in America that own a gun are at a record low!

54 percent of Americans owned a gun in 1977, today only 32 percent do.
Gun owners today are overwhelmingly older white males, presumably bitter and overcompensating for something.

Here's an interesting statistic: 51 percent of all Americans think the government should have the right to limit the number of firearms a person can own.

That's a bit. . .uh. . .sobering. So basically what your telling me is that an increasingly narrow group of people are buying an increasing amount of weapons?

That can't end well.

It can if you have satellite television!

where's the connection to fix and am radio?

don't own a gun but am a big pro-gun guy.

you're presuming a lot.

What I find amusing is that people think polls are accurate and everyone buys guns from a Gun shop or other places where records are maintained.

So what's going on here then?

A) There are a small number of households that own a crapload of guns, thus distorting the figures.

B) Gun sales are up, but they're not keeping up with the population increase.

C) Both A & B.

Vetteman owns multiple guns because he's afraid I'll drive down to San Diego and kick his ass.

you'd need to look at the study in detail, but there's a few things to consider,

1)guns keep pretty well
2)there have been more guns than people for as long as i can remember.
3)lots of unregistered weapons
4)economics
5)general low crime rates
6)in recent years folks have made art of getting around registration laws and modifying guns.

Could be the increase of the % Households that are single mothers who typically do not buy or can afford a gun. But definitely there is a rise in the number of people who like me like a collection of different weapons for different purposes,

Looks like a certain birth cohort is skewing the statistics...

they count.

I'm not disputing that.

But is this the explanation we're looking for? The older, gun-happy cohort is dying off and being replaced by a cohort less-interested in owning firearms? And possibly less interested in gun collecting or owning multiple firearms for whatever reason?

Maybe the numbers are skewed by those vandwelling.

Still don't get why you're all so tooled up? Sorry but a civilised society shouldn't need them.

Maybe.

Gun sales up, but fewer American household own guns Because...

Americans own multiple guns for may reasons. For home defense, a single shotgun will suffice. For concealed carry, at least 2 different guns are reasonable: large for winter weather, small for summer weather.

Do the "gun folk" shoot at a range? If so, then having several guns just for range shooting is reasonable. Shooting guns is fun. Who owns just one gun?

Lots of people probably.
