Two years ago, Trevor Dooley, a 69-year-old school bus driver, walked across the street from his home in Valrico to stop kids from skateboarding in a neighborhood park. At the time, David James, 41, an Iraq War veteran, was playing basketball with his 8-year-old daughter, Danielle, on a court in the park.

When the older man tried to chase away the skateboarders, the younger man stuck up for the kids.

The verbal argument between the two men turned physical. The daughter of the younger man would later testify how the confrontation ended.

"Did the man try to walk away at any point?" Danielle James was asked.

"Yeah, like my dad got on top of him to keep him down," the girl testified.

And that's when the older man fired a single shot, killing the younger man who had the best of him in their physical confrontation.

Dooley, the older man, is black.

James, the younger man, was white.

And just as in the Martin case, the unarmed person was killed by the armed person who claimed that he feared for his life.

The difference here is race.

So how long did the 69-year-old black man get to walk the streets of Valrico while the local authorities yielded to his claim of protection under the state's stand-your-ground law?

Less than two days.

The shooting happened on a Sunday. By that Tuesday afternoon, Dooley was charged with manslaughter.

His case, and his claim of protection under the state's gun law, is now a matter for the criminal justice system to sort out.

White shooter - no arrest a month later, and counting.

Black shooter - charged the second day.

Still wondering, though, why this writer and so many others still insist on defining Zimmerman as "white"...

Sounds like a valid argument. Though if the white guy was not beating him, but only holding him, that could be the legal difference. Don't get your shorts in a bunch I said could, not is. The problem with comparing one case to another is that they are never exactally the same.

I don't wear "shorts", Gertrude...

Another factor in the differences is witnesses.

If you are going to shoot someone, make sure there are no witnesses.

If we didn't have the 2nd amendment, none of this would have happened. I blame the founding fathers.

Because hispanic is not considered a race?

Zimmerman should receive the death penalty before he can kill a guard or another kid.

The 911 call clearly indicates zimmy, the self appointed head of neighbourhood watch, was aggressively stalking the kid in the hoodie (A clear sign of criminal intent) against direction from the operator to stop.

All these stupid, old, out of touch windbags are making this about race and his clothing, or pictures on his FB.

Their stupidity and hypocrisy has reached it's boiling point, it's iggy season.

Yeah, don't bother to investigate, gather facts, interview witnesses, examine evidence, determine if charges can be made, if charges are filed, and an arrest made, don't bother with a trial, don 't presume innocent until proven guilty, don't allow for due process, you are right.

From what I have read, and I apologize for not having all the facts that you apparently do, is Zimmerman was instructed not to follow Martin after he was already out of his vehicle, and when instructed not to follow Martin, was returning to his vehicle when confronted by Martin.

All these stupid, old, out of touch windbags are making this about race and his clothing, or pictures on his FB. The race issue has been brought up by both sides, no one is clean from this mudslinging.

Their stupidity and hypocrisy has reached it's boiling point, it's iggy season. The stupidity is people jumping to conclusions, on all sides, people are leaping to conclusions without having all the facts. I don't know if Zimmerman was justified in claiming self defense or not, my gut feeling is that he is not, but if I was getting my head slammed on the sidewalk by someone, and I had a gun, I would probably shoot him.

I am happy to finally understand where you are coming from. If you follow someone down a street, and try to engauge them in a conversation that they do not wish to have, then that person is entitled to beat the living fuck out of you, and you have no legal recourse to stop it.
Ok now I understand your point.

In the FL case, its my understanding that the witnesses never saw who started the confrontation, which is a rather critical detail ..

so then how come EVERYONE is ready to fry a CIVIC MINDED COMMUNITY ORGANINIZER vs a DRUG CRAZED CRIMINAL THUG?
