Wife purchased rosebud sounds, but it appears to be unsafe. Does less depth mean less risk? I need some thoughts before I throw these away.

Throw them away???? How wasteful! There are poverty-stricken pervs who want them desperately-- send them to me, I'll get them to a loving home.:D

Seriously...
Knowing what you're doing means less risk. Google "urethral sounding" and read up. Also, google for images of the male urethral passage. They cant go anywhere beyond your urethra, anyway-- there's a tight bend that will stop them. You could pierce the wall right there if you pushed hard enough, but there is no need to push hard at all.

They're perfectly safe. Lube is a good idea.

You can buy sounds on Amazon now.

it seems as though the word "infection" pops up a lot when researching. how is this risk reduced, and what are some good ways to clean sounds? do penis plugs that only enter 2 or so inches involve the same risk? thanks for the responses, but it helps to be educated on these things. thanks again.....

"infection" pops up because people think they should mention it-- to prove that they are serious and knowledgeable, yanno.

Just wash them with dishwashing liquid and put them away in their case. if you shoved the neck of your lube bottle up your ass, you don't want to use that lube on the sounds.

But a man's urethra-- generally speaking-- isn't all that susceptable to infection, and peeing after play washes the tubing out pretty well. Do be aware though, because you might be more sensitive than most... or not.

Short plugs are generally wider than sounds, and create a fuller more stretching sensation, according to my male friends who play with them. Also, the ones that stay in place with a ring that wraps behind your cockhead, I am told, give a wonderful feeling of weight.

Stella's right about the stretching sensation, but even more than that it gives a sensation of having your cock massaged from several directions at once. The plug does an internal massage the feels a lot like getting stroked, only deeper. The ring around the rim holding the plug in massages those very sensitive spots that surround the head, and gets them ALL AT ONCE, since it contacts the entire rim, moving over them as the plug pushes in and out. And the ring holds back the shaft skin, so there's that sensation too. One last thing, I recommend the silicone rubber rings, since they form themselves to the contour of your rim, getting into every little sensuous spot. And the connector that fits in the v-groove (a VERY sensitive part of the cock) gets stimulated with the short post that connects the plug to the ring.

Just a small flexing stimulates me to the point that I start pre-cumming heavily and immediately. If you haven't tried this, you'll love it, and it is pretty safe, just make sure you pee when you're done and you'll be fine. As Stella said, just wash it off when you're done. I also recommend you get one with a through hole, so if/when you do cum, it let's you do it without feeling backed up. Just make sure you wash it out thoroughly when you finish with it. One additional thing, it's also fun carrying on a conversation with a woman while you're wearing it secretly under your clothes.. kind of a freebie. and well worth the clandestine experience! If you're REALLY lucky, you'll have (or find) a woman who likes to put it on you...!!! It's a great experience, for both partners!
