You could gain a fair bit of knowledge from movies and shows shot in the area. I recall many scenes of playground Bball being played and the people playing.

GoogleEarth is a great place to go and see things from street level, as well as aerial views. It would be akin to standing right there at that moment. You can travel any road or highway, as if you were driving them and look around at things you pass.
