In most of the Midwest, you can get your tires slashed for not having a Jesus fish on your car. I would not want to flaunt gay plates, I'd be so worried about being rear ended all the time.

Again it is possible they have gotten better but come on really how is it possible.

On the other hand, I find it kinda funny that the IYG had to sue just to get the plate approved. Granted it is a good fear that the money generated doesn't go to what it's supposed to with the group. Still as far as I know most groups just provide a routing source or get audited by motor vehicles.

Well, as a point of reference, and because I've actually lived in both places (as opposed to just talking smack bullshit), I've had to put up with a LOT less homophobia and religious crap here in the Midwest than I did when we lived in California.

For example, we left California because we COULDN'T be married there and moved to the Midwest where we could. I also believe that California is home to SEVERAL rabidly homophobic super churches & religious organizations.

So let's see: I can be legally married in Iowa, I can have a FULLY equal civil union in Illinois and Indiana offers state license plates that promote LGBT equality and helps support it financially. California? Nope, nope and nothing!

What I'm saying is that y'all need to go easy on tossing them rocks around inside that glass house you're living in and stop acting all left coast righteous (Stella) cuz your house (and part of the country) is WAY more fucked up than mine.

My cars have been covered with gay stickers for as long as I've been driving. Back in 1999 or so, the wife and I left a movie theater and found "DIE FAGS" written in the dirt on our back window, and something else on the dirty hood. It was disturbing, and we did call the police in case someone was waiting to jump us...but in 13-year retrospect, it was amusing that all they did was write in the dirt. In fact, thinking of it now, I wonder if it was done by teenagers looking to be cool to friends, but not having the guts to cause actual damage.

My current car has multiple gay stickers (I even got the little stick figures just so I could have 2 women and 2 cats!) and so far no problems, but that's in the close-in suburbs of DC. It's been driven to less-friendly places without problems, but we don't ever stay there long, so who knows.

Is this the first gay-related license plate though? I haven't heard of one before! I love looking at what's available...my favorite is this one (y'all can figure out why, right?) I just wish it was in my state!

I live in Indiana and showed the plate to both my spouse and my eldest daughter, neither one of them "got it" and I had to explain what it meant.

There will be some that grasp the meaning and roll their eyes, others will get it and react in a aggressive manner, others will see it and like the fact that someone is using it and supporting a not-so-popular cause, others - like the spouse and the kid next to me, will simply think "neat plate."
