Thousands in Los Angeles protest gay-marriage ban - quoted from yahoo.news

Homosexuality itself isn't a movement, true. But there is such a thing as the gay rights movement.

I'm pretty surprised anyone would not be familiar with that term, actually.

No, being gay is not a political movement, it is a sexual orientation. There is a political movement started by gay people for the purpose of defending their rights, and I believe this is what Allard is referring to as "the" movement.

I must apologize here for my inappropriate attempt at lightening the mood. It was on reflection in poor taste for the current discusion.

Again, apologies to any I offended with this comment.

I can see her opinion, but if you look at what I posted that appeared to have provoked her I believe I state that I believe we should take the "Marriage" out of legality and make all joinings "civil Unions" and give them equal weight. Make marriage a religious ceremony to appease any and all who are hung up on names and titles.
It's hard to be objective when the state has just told you that your legally wedded wife is no longer your legally wedded wife.

Now an aside, that will get me yelled at here. The violence of the anti 8 protesters is an affront. It is detestable that such an "Open minded" group should be the first to want to MAKE anyone accept them. My god Listen to the arguments that have been put out. It's time for everyone to ACCEPT gay marriage? What happened to peoples' free will here? And the documented cases of vandalism and violence propagated by the anti 8 protesters? For such a peaceful people we certainly have stepped back to the caves haven't we?
"Open minded"

I do not think that word means what you think it means. It certainly doesn't mean the doormat that lets anyone express bigotry without calling them on their bullshit.

It IS time for everyone to ACCEPT gay marriages. You don't have to like them. You don't want to marry gay? Fine, then don't. I won't try to prevent you from marrying straight. Free will? Your free will stops at the end of my fucking foot. You don't get to impose YOUR free will on me. Neither does the Mormon church.

You know what? fuckoff into the wild blue. How dare you condemn the actions of desperation and anger when it isn't your fight, your life, and your family.

How about the documented cases of vandalism and violence against gays through the years? How about the documented cases of violence and vandalism propagated by the Pro-8 protesters? I know someone living across the street from the church was throwing eggs at the protesters, early in the morning.

I was just looking at a breakdown of the voting on Prop 8. Apparently it was the black voting that passed it.

Blacks voted to pass it by 70%. Whites voted yes by slightly less than 50%. Asians by 49%. Latinos by 53%.

Here's the link.

That is kind of misleading though. If you look at the actual numbers (I need to find them again, then I will post the link) as how the break down by age and whether they identify themselves as being religious or not you get a WHOLE different picture.

Less than 50% of white voted yes, but over 80% of "religious whites" voted yes. They same ratios held pretty true for blacks and Latinos as well. When you look at the disparity by age it is even more glaring.

The people who voted solidly as a block were older religious votes who all STRONGLY supported Prop 8.

That gives us a handle to work from, pointing out the similarities between interracial marriage issues and intrasexual marriages issues. Maybe.

Would that it were so. The African-American Civil Rights movement was supported by Blacks, young whites and Jews. The Women's Rights movement was supported by upper-middle and upper class women, Jews and those men who thought it was a good way to get laid. Yeah, I'm cynical about men, I are one! The Latino Civil Rights Movement was supported by Latinos, whites who realized that it was good for business and Jews. Getting the black vote to support civil rights for others when they don't feel that their own are completely won, yet, will be a struggle. The only group that has consistantly supported equal rights for everyone are the Conservative, Reformed and Secular Jews.

Blacks also raised holy hell when gay and lesbian persons had the nerve to call themselves a persecuted minority. Coincidence or outright bigotry?

Just sayin'. ;)

What I don't understand about the whole issue is where the adverse affect to society OR the adverse affects to those who oppose same-sex marriage are. The main complaint, from what I understand, is that marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman and allowing gay couples to marry will hurt, bastardize, destroy marriage.

Someone tell me how my marriage, my life, my finances, or even my kids if I had them, are negatively affected enough by same-sex marriage to warrant creating laws specifically to prohibit them. Anyone? No? Okay, well then if you can't tell me how I'm personally affected, tell me how you are affected to the point where such laws are justified. Somebody? Anybody?

Basically, I'm embarrassed to live in a state where the comfort of some damned chicken has priority over the civil rights of human beings.

You obviously don't understand that those McNuggets on legs are vastly more important than mere humans and their petty problems. They need to be kept comfy until they're slaughtered.

*sarc * ;)

Well, a lot of them have a chip on their shoulder about it, and it's hard to blame them, I still hear a lot of racist comments, and it seems that they're even the whipping boy for other minorities, Latinos, etc.

And really, of all the Blacks I've ever known, they were nearly uniformly urbane, witty and humane, and that includes gangsta's - 'course it's a bit different in the projects. At night. But even then, I've never know them to go around fucking people up just for the fun of it like White frat boys and rednecks will do.

But if there's any group that has suffered any remotely similar sort of random violence and discrimination like Blacks have, it's Gays.

Nailed it.
Yeah, it's a very little publicized demographic - in fact my image of "the hood" is pretty much that - a few guys are always hanging out in front of the liquor store, and a hood rat skulking here and there, but everywhere else it's Church ladies out in their summer dresses, hats, gloves, the works - it's very Fifties.

'Xackly.
All the same, no Church Lady has any say over my family life. She has all the say she wants over her own family life.

But the clubs - I don't own the threads to hang out in the Black clubs. It ain't jeans and Tee shirts.

Understood. I worked in South Central for eight years. I know exactly who you're talking about.

It's not me you have to convince.
Nope-- it's the California Supreme court. Who have already expressed their opinion.

And I would love to see that fugly behemoth of a Westwood Mormon temple burn to the ground. I'd love to see that happen. Empty, of course.

At 2:00 a.m. on a Tuesday, just to make sure?
