Christmas movies!

"Christmas Story" has it hands down. I love it. Watching with my family it is an annual tradition. I also am fortunate that my mother actually saved, back in the corner of her basement, hidden away for lo those many years, my very own Red Ryder lever action BB gun from when I was just a tyke. Thank you mom. No I didn't shoot my eye out. We found it cleaning out the house after her death several years ago. Now days, it enjoys a new home with me. A couple of years ago when the subject of the movie "Christmas Story" came up at a holiday party we were hosting, I was delighted to bring it out for all the guests. Of course the guys especially enjoyed it, some remembering back to the 50's and their own childhood when they also had one, or at least wanted one.

A few more from me...

The Santa Clause 1, 2, and 3. I just love Tim Allen. :)

Fucking right Tim Allen.

Vouch. That dude is way funnier than he ever gets credit for, I did not particularly like those movies, but I liked him in the part, makes it work.

This will get us so off topic, but -- although I liked The Santa Clause (haven't seen 2 or 3), my favorite Tim Allen movie is Galaxy Quest.

For me it's "White Christmas" (the divine Vera Ellen).
"Christmas Carroll" is a bit of a problem. I like the Muppet's version (with Michael Caine), but for straight acting is has to be Patrick Stewart.

I cannot remember the name of that film with Richard Attenborough (as Kris Kringle; "in God we trust"),. It was on last year and I think its great.

Then there's "Elf". Nice one !

Christmas is my favorite!
However, I've never seen 'It's A Wonderful Life'.

My favorite is 'Prancer'. I love love love that movie! :)
(Sam Elliot was probably my first celeb crush when I was, oh, about seven, lol.
(Thank you Gar in the movie 'Mask'.) So it probably helps that he's in it. :D)

'Elf' is a close second, but then again, so are the rest of them. :D

I  everything about this time of year! :nana:

See, I'm not sure "A Christmas Carol" can really be acted "straight." It's just a fable, and fantastic at that. Don't get me wrong, I love Patrick Stewart, but for me, the 1951 version is best.

Christmas is my favorite!

We must be the only two. ;)

There is a real OceanBreeze soap.

Vouch to both the Muppets's Christmas Carol, and Patrick Stewert being awesome like Tim Allen.

Christmas Carol is a scary story!

See, I'm not sure "A Christmas Carol" can really be acted "straight." It's just a fable, and fantastic at that.
It absolutely can be acted straight because it is a ghost story. It was the tradition in Britain at that time (a hold-over from pre-Victoria times that Dickens would have grown up with), to tell ghost stories on Christmas eve. And that's just what Dickens did when he created a Christmas Carol. Re-read it sometime and you'll see. It's damn scary. And while it does have some humor, some sweetness, and some wackiness in its characters, it has no more of such elements than any other Dickens story. If David Copperfield and others can be done straight, I see no reason why Christmas Carol can't be done that way. It's only because the 20th century erroneously cast the story as kid-stuff, with cartoons and the like, that we tend to assume otherwise.

But one read of the real thing and you'll see. For example, when the ghost of Christmas presents the twisted, anorexic twins Hunger and Ignorance, it's not wholly metaphoric as in a fable. Children like this were as much a reality to Dickens as they are to us, and what the ghost points out about them was as true then as it is now: that they undermine whatever veneer of civilization we have, and can completely destroy it. Seriously. Really.

I love the muppets and don't begrudge them their version of Christmas Carol--or any other version including those with songs and such. As I said, I like watching all such versions...however, a Christmas Carol, done right and faithful to the style of the book, shouldn't make us feel like we're watching a fairytale, all puppets and music. Done absolutely faithfully right...it should scare the shit out of us.

Well then, I am corrected.

A Christmas Story (or as my little Spit Fire likes to call it: "The Boys") is definitely one of the top favorites around here. I even bought a copy of it for my pops on DVD so he wouldn't have to wait for the 24 hour marathon on Christmas Eve. Note: Now Spit Fire has learned how to whine like Randy, say fudge like Ralphie, and associate her vintage Lil Orphan Annie poster with this movie.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (both specials)

The Xena episode "Solstice Carol" (not a movie, but still noteworthy). Who doesn't love when Gabrielle gives her donkey Tobias to Mary and Joseph?

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

on another holiday note, why don't the holiday radio stations play any Hanukkah music?

Elf!

Love, Actually

Miracle on 34th Street (both the original and the re-make with Elizabeth Perkins)

hrmmm....

No one mentioned The Ref, Kevin Spacey was most excellent in that, along with Leary. Good film, a cat pee anti-theft device, a stolen baby jesus, and 1 Scandinavian Christmas dinner - with fire hats, what else do you need?

1: Die Hard 2
2: Lethal Weapon
3: Die Hard

Those three movies have everything a christmas special needs!

These may not be traditional Christmas movies, but I love some of the more contemporary ones like Last Holiday, The Holiday, Love Actually, The Letter, While You Were Sleeping, This Christmas, and Nothing Like the Holidays (only Puerto Rican Christmas movie I have seen—love it). The Muppet Christmas Carol is my favorite version of the Christmas Carol, though I enjoy the others as well. I also like the Polar Express and the old version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The Hallmark Channel is a staple in my house at this time of the year, all the sappy heartwarming holiday movies . . . I just eat them up (the cynical part of me thinks I should be embarrassed to admit that , but the sappy part of me just smiles :D).

Many are good, but my three tops are "A Christmas Carol" (1951 Alistair Sim, and when I was a kid, the uncovering of "want" and "ignorance" by the Spirit of Christmas Present was scary), "Srooged" (Bill Murray; a good slapstick farce), and "La Pastorale" (Linda Ronstad, for Three King's Day - a whole other view of the holidays, for a gringo, at least).

Love, Actually

I can't believe that took almost 40 posts! Not just my favorite Christmas movie but among my top ten, period. It's not Christmas until I've watched that, preferably with as many of my friends as I can fit in one place.

I was partial to It's a Wonderful Life for a long time, but I rarely watch it anymore - I'm burned out on it, and honestly, if you start to think about it, there's a fair bit to criticize. (For starters, the "good" Bedford Falls looks like a horrendously boring place to live. Say what you will about Pottersfield, at least there was stuff to do!) For personal reasons I don't like A Christmas Story, but I'll concede it's a good one in any case.

It's not really a Christmas movie, but The Sound of Music kind of feels like one to me and I try to watch it this time of year as well.

I'm with you on The Sound of Music. Same thing with The Wizard of Oz. I think it may be because channels like ABC Family and TBS make it a point to play those movies specifically around this time of the year.

I've never seen it's A Wonderful Life...

I also really like The Family Stone. (Say what you will about this flick, but Diane Keaton is great as the lovely matriarch).

There are many I enjoy, but my must-see movies are the original It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. Also love A Christmas Carol. And I've been in the mood lately to see Love, Actually.

Oh, and A Christmas Story.

I love A Christmas Carol, but I never ever want to see the movie or any of its re-makes, hear the radio play, or read the book. Never ever again. I was in the play about a half dozen times. I just don't get excited about it or filled with a desire to watch it anymore.

on another holiday note, why don't the holiday radio stations play any Hanukkah music?

The radio stations here that play holiday music (starting November 1st...way too early in my opinion) do play "The Hanukkah Song" by Adam Sandler. I think there are 3 versions of the song now, too.

Do those count? :)

Wow lots of movies mentioned that I never would've thought of as being Christmas moves. But hey, that's all right. Everyone has their favorites to watch at this time of year.

Off to make dinner and watch one of the countless Christmas movies I've DVRed off Lifetime and ABC Family.

We're going through Harry Potter for a holiday-ish mood this year.

That way I get to avoid actual Xmas movies, of which, truth be told, I don't like any all that much, plus, as it's the first time I'm watching the entire series, I get to rave about it to complete annoyance and pitying looks of everyone who pestered me to watch/read HP when you 'had to'.

The hotness that is Rickman as Snape isn't hurting any, either. :cathappy:
