Hi, cholesterol. Bye, meals I knew.

They seem to come with side effects. I want to get better, not trade problems.

Everybody is going to flame the shit out of me for this, but so be it.

TAKE THE DAMN STATIN AND EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT!!

Seriously, dude, your numbers simply aren't that bad. They look like mine before I started the regimen eight or nine years ago.

My total Cholesterol was somewhere over 200 and is now down to 145. Admittedly, my HDL number sucks, but in your case, "over 40" does not mean freaking out over a "39". That's stupid.

No side effects from the statin for me. Yeah, the doc has to monitor your kidney function closely, but for me that has simply meant not taking NSAIDs for pain. Acetaminophen only.

The two biggest things are don't stop exercising and keep your total weight down. Those are as or more important than what you eat. If I lost 20 pounds and got into semi-decent physical shape, ALL my numbers would be golden.

I stay away from fried foods. Broil or bake all read meat. More fish. More green veggies. Less starch. Common sense stuff.

But just take the damn statin.

It's a lot better than living off of beans and tofu.

Similar ones are on the Norwegian side of my family.

I totally blame all the Oles in my family. They all had high cholesterol, diabetes and heart disease. My whole family is fucked. That's why my sisters, cousins and I all mated outside the Norwegian stock -- we wanted to give our kids a shot at normal genes.

I'm with you. I eat a lot of good stuff and love whole grains and veggies and happen to LOVE tofu, but my genetics dictate a creep in my numbers now that I'm post 40. I intend to stick to my same diet (which includes Phillly cheesesteaks and cheeseburgers on occasion because I LOVE THEM) and I will so take the fucking pills as soon as my numbers go up. I don't want to have to eat beige, bland food to get my numbers down, which is what happens in my family when the numbers turn. So I will eat my quinoa and have my chorizo, too.

I probably should have also mentioned that I've never smoked or drank alcohol. But seriously, if anyone is that self-destructive, having a diet Pepsi with your chocolate-croissant-a-la-mode ain't the solution to your problem.

You're only a couple years older than me. And your numbers aren't that bad.

Try a few things. Add an aerobic workout with your other work at the gym. Good luck to you.

Thank you all for the good thoughts. Some good information, and some leads to look up on more of it. It truly is like learning a foreign language. At least to me.

I didn't think my numbers were all that high either. A friend of mine told me his cardiologist's total was over 400. So how bad can 216 be?

I'll try to get the numbers in shape, and I'll try to figure out some "better" food choices.

But I'll never be one of those people who enjoys eating.

My son has a great line about broccoli. He says it is like anal sex. If you're forced to have it as a child, you probably won't like it as an adult.

Hopefully I can find a dietician to beat on long enough to get answers that are useful to me.

Cheese. Good or bad? Without the "other hand". 8)

I'm curious as to why cooking for yourself isn't an option.

vitamins = expensive pee.

Yes and no. It depends on the dosage. Anything much over %100 recommended daily value goes to waste.

You need to make an appointment with a registered dietitian.

And that is why you're called the good witch.

Okay, I'm done agreeing with people. I now return you to your regularly scheduled John Doe (contrary, sarcastic and curmudgeonly).

24th. And I can barely remember 23 or 24. Although I do remember I wasn't remotely concerned with cholesterol numbers back then. Now those were the days. :)
24th is my wife's birthday too. I got her a Kindle Fire. I tried to figure out the gift-level most likely to result in a blow job and go slightly above it. I am an overachiever that way.

Ohhhhhkkaaayy. Thanks for that info. I should probably tell you I'm a lot harder to shop for. I'm thinking at least three cars and two houses.

Nice cars. Big houses.

Or maybe just a card and we forget the gift exchange.

You should edit either this post or the one where you say you don't drink.

"The best drug is NO DRUG."

The docs started my best pal on a statin and he didn't like what it did; he stopped.

I was raised Southern ( which means my mother kept a jar of bacon fat on the stovetop for ready access ).

"Everything in moderation" has, more or less, governed my diet. I am lucky in that I've always been physically active. I've run distances ever since my late 20s and I now get some form of vigorous exercise almost every day.

Oatmeal is your friend. "Instant" oatmeal is not. It takes me seven minutes to brew up the real stuff; I like it drier than most folk and eat it at least 5 days a week.

Gonna be contrarian here, for the most part, because I follow alternative medicine, with a heavy dose of medical studies as backup.

First, your numbers aren't bad, thor is right. The medical society keeps dropping the targets to sell more drugs; end of story. Statins kill people, that's why some of you got sick taking them. Yeah, they lower your cholesterol, but just as many people still die of heart disease. Turns out, your body needs that cholesterol to flush the crap out of your system. There's plenty of peer reviewed medical studies out there to back these claims.

Second, oatmeal is an excellent option, but I suggest that you stop using the stuff in the packets. First off, it's milled too fine to do any good. Second, artificial ingredients and lots of sugar. And regular oatmeal doesn't take much longer to prepare, to be honest. My opinion is that real sugar in small doses isn't that bad for you - it's when you have a sugar addiction going on that you are at risk. All that artificially flavored and colored candy, though, is really bad for you. Honestly, a good rule is to avoid white foods as much as possible - white flour, white potatoes, white sugar, white rice. But that's good for everyone, regardless of cholesterol levels.

Third, good on you for both the fish oil pills and the good exercising regimen. You may want to consider taking the fish oil twice a day, instead of once - my doc may be mainstream, but she works within my desire to live a prescription free life to the fullest amount possible, and that was her recommendation when my numbers inched up (I was fine with them but she got a little concerned). It worked to both of our satisfaction.

The many people who suggest that you learn to cook are right, and those who said it isn't hard are also right. It's also hella cheaper to eat healthy, well prepared meals than junk in the end. Anything you buy pre-packaged is going to have "bad stuff" in it, with the exception of a small number of the pre-packs at Trader Joe's (you still have to really read their labels carefully) and the rare other "find". Most frozen food has salt out the butt, because when you freeze food, the flavor diminishes massively - they put all that salt in to make up for the lost flavors. Sin is also right about deli meat - if you look at the labels in the display, they say right on them that they have water with sodium added to them.

I'm not sure how to help you like veggies, other than to say that your health depends on learning to do so. One of the few things I can recommend is to "hide" them in other food, but that requires cooking. For example, it's amazing what you can put into meatballs or spaghetti sauce without veggie haters disliking them. And if you start with ground chicken or turkey, half and half with the ground beef, the meatballs will be much healthier without losing too much taste or consistency. If you can learn to like salads, that will help a lot, as long as you avoid iceberg lettuce (romaine is best) and most bottled dressings.

In the end, our good witch and others who said see a dietitian are absolutely right - we here are all amateurs, in the end, despite being well-meaning ones. But going back to the beginning, your numbers are not bad, especially considering how you choose to fuel your body. ;) Remember the old computer adage, "garbage in, garbage out"?

Best of luck with this. :rose:

I understand you're totally caught up now in charting the rest of your eating life to be lived as healthy (read: safely) as possible...

...so you may want to keep an eye out for that blue Tundra next Tuesday morning @ 0736 while you're in the crosswalk of 4th and Main.
