Yes. They ALL quit. And let me be clear, I decided to post this as I think it's a "whoa!" sort of thing, the sort of dramatic event that makes for a good story; it would be, IMHO, for any well-known politician who was aiming to run for president. You all can decide for yourselves if the fact that it happened to Newt, in particular, makes it a comedy or a tragedy....

The entire top echelon of Newt Gingrich's presidential campaign resigned on Thursday, a stunning mass exodus that left his bid for the Republican nomination in tatters. But the former House speaker vowed defiantly to remain a candidate.

"I am committed to running the substantive, solutions-oriented campaign I set out to run earlier this spring," the Gingrich said in a posting to his Facebook page. "The campaign begins anew Sunday in Los Angeles."

Rick Tyler, Gingrich's spokesman, said that he, campaign manager Rob Johnson and senior strategists had all quit, along with aides in the early primary and caucus states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. Other officials said Gingrich was informed that his entire high command was quitting in a meeting at his headquarters in Washington. They cited differences over the direction of the campaign. "We had a different vision for victory," Tyler told The Associated Press. "And since we couldn't resolve that difference, I didn't feel I could be useful in serving him."

He has made a career in politics but to be really bankable, he has to run for President. If he looses, he becomes a more expensive speaker on the rubber chicken circuit. If he wins, he can retire with a pension and the regard of a grateful country, glad to see his back.

Having his whole staff resign is an opportunity to make changes that he needs to. The bad news is who is he going to get to replace them?

Newt will be the comic relief in what looks to be a very dour bunch of Repug's this cycle.

Newt's well padded, physically and financially. His run for the presidency is all about ego, something he is even better equipped with than other candidates. However, he wasn't getting any traction from any of the major groups that vote GOP. His staff is just getting out while the getting is good. Continue his campaign? Whistling in the dark.

Newt's staff is leaving because he ignores their advice and they're tired of it. Newt's a pedant, an idea man, a thinker, but he has zero people skills and comes off as remote and aloof. His taking a cruise with his current trophy wife to the Greek Islands instead of campaigning plus dissing other Republican's plans for deficit reduction put his political future in neutral. He needs to bow out gracefully and go teach at some university.

Well, but that isn't a good enough reason. Look at Palin, she was on the losing team and she's made out like gangbusters. If your team makes a good enough showing you can come out smelling like a rose even if you lose. You just have to be with a candidate who makes the right kind of splash.

Well, the 2008 election was very close, so Palin doesn't look like that much of a loser. Next year is going to be Little Big Horn for the GOP. Anyone that rides with Custer ain't coming back.

On the contrary. I think he's overflowing with hope. It's a bit early to be making such predictions, though, I think.

ROB, of course, is nutty as squirrel poop. Voters care about two issues: Prosperity and protection: Are you better off now than you were in 2008? In May McDonalds created 1/2 of all the new jobs in America.

Here in Schlubville 1000s of teachers and 1000s of government workers lost their jobs in May and June. People arent spending money, real estate values continue sinking, and tax revenues are expected to be even worse during 2012.

So while the GOP stable is filled with Sarah and the Seven Dwarfs, Obama is captain of the good ship LOLLIPOP, and LOLLIPOP is foundering in high seas and heavy weather. A sturdy piece of flotsam may appeal to voters more than the slippery, listing deck of the LOLLIPOP.

If the GOP is the party of NO! the Democrats are the party of I DONT KNOW.

Ah, but, voters also have the attention span of a squirrel. The Obama administration has plenty of time yet to make 50.01 percent of the voters comfortable enough with prosperity and protection to win again against X candidate who won't convincingly say anything they like to hear better.

And it won't take much for voters to feel they are better off in 2012 than they were at election time in 2008.

As I posted, it's too early to either predict anything on this--or, really, to be posting threads about it on an erotica board. Just spinning wheels and rattling brains.

Anyway, I think Newt has turned the worm nicely on his departed strategists this morning: "They wanted me to do it the old political style that hasn't worked. I want to just be honest with America."

That actually should play well in Peoria. (Which takes us right back to the voters having the attention span of a squirrel.)

A third trip back to the "voters have the attention span of a squirrel": I'd never say "never" about anything like this. How likely was it that they'd ever vote in a black man with a name like Barack Obama?
