From here:
People who ate lots of salt were not more likely to get high blood pressure, and were less likely to die of heart disease than those with a low salt intake, in a new European study. The findings "certainly do not support the current recommendation to lower salt intake in the general population," study author Dr. Jan Staessen, of the University of Leuven in Belgium, told Reuters Health.
Whoo-hooo! 'Nana dance! http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/bananaheadbanger.gif

Pass the popcorn http://bestsmileys.com/eating1/16.gif and the Fritos and the dill pickles.....

If you had ever read the original study that started all this 'low salt' mania you would wonder how in the world anyone ever took it seriously. One cause of high blood pressure is low potassium and one of the things you were supposed to eat in the study was bananas . . . which are packed with potassium! No wonder the subjects' blood pressure dropped. But the idiot in charge claimed it was because of the low sodium. Whadda maroon!

Nothing tastes better than one of those big ol' pretzels crusted with salt and slathered with mustard.

These stupid studies are forever contradicting each other. I say eat what you like until the doctor says don't do it or you keel over. :D

http://bestsmileys.com/drooling/3.gif Okay, pass one of those pretzels this way! I know some folks like the pretzels with cheese or even sugar, but salt and mustard are the only soft pretzel toppings for me! Especially if the pretzel is nice and pipping hot. Yum.

Yet another "this" now goes "that"? Moderation wins again.

I never got the connection - I put salt on everything.

I did however know a guy who ate nothing but fast food and ended up with crystalline polyps in his colon from all the sodium he was ingesting.

I also stuck with real butter, but I do make some effort to get a decent amount of fiber.

Just aim for a low glycemic index. It seems to be good for a lot of what ails us, especially after we turn fifty.

A moments pause...

PUT DOWN THOSE DAMNED PRETZELS, 3113!!!

...and a wee bit of reflection on great medical mistakes of the past may be in order.

As a retired internist buddy frequently said, one medical study seldom proves or disproves anything. The causes of disease are multiple and intertwined like a bowl of spaghetti. It's hard to see how one medical study could prove anything. All it can do is add to the knowledge base and hopefully some bright light will put it all in perspective down the road.

During most of my time as a family doc, it was considered a good idea to give estrogens to symptomatic menopausal women. The known risk of increased uterine cancer was thought to be outweighed by the larger reduction in cardiovascular disease.

Then one major study didn't find a reduction in cardiovascular disease and almost overnight, estrogens were taboo (and my internist friend again said, "one study seldom...")

Over the following years the increase in the incidence of cardiovascular disease in post-menopausal women....

So 3113, munch away on your pretzels if you wish. Just don't be too surprised when things get even more confused in a year or two...:(:(:(

I gave up adding salt to anything in the 1960s. I figure there's already enough salt in everything I eat to kill me.

...and then there's the question of interpreting the studies. The first major study of cholesterol control and heart attacks concluded that men not controlling their cholesterol had a 34% higher chance of having a heart attack than those who controlled their cholesterol. The conclusion, however, was based on the results that showed a 100 attack rate per 1000 for contollers and 134 per 1000 for uncontrolled.T hat's actually a 3.4% difference, and probably not statistically significant.

The 34% figure applied to men who had heart attacks, not all people in the study. Eliminating those who didn't have attacks would leave you with the trivial conclusion that you were 34% more likely to not be controlling your chlosterol IF you had a heart attack. Not quite the same thing.

And I've seen a bit too much of this in medical research. The non-sufferers get dropped from the statistical analysis, and you end up with inflated statistics on the disease. And you might make a change in your life-style or meds for a 34% better chance, but is it worth it for a 3.4%?

The AHA Boston study that was supposed to nail down the connection between dietary cholesterol and heart disease was massive. It followed over 3600 men for a number of years. When it was published, the AHA proudly announced that those men who had gone on the low cholesterol diet had indeed had a reduction in heart disease. Then some smartass journalist (a real journalist) read the entire report and disclosed that though the rate of heart disease was reduced, the overall mortality remained the same. Instead of dying of cardiovascular disease, they succumbed to suicide, homicide and accidents. The only conclusion some of us can draw from that is, perhaps, fat really is happy.

I've just finished up my labs in Forensic Anthropology for my students, and I can confidently report that death is a definite result of birth. If one truly wishes to avoid passing from this life, be sure not to enter it. Honestly. Fully 100% of the skeletons my students have studied came from people who once were alive.

A GP friend of mine summed up medical studies in a somewhat unique style.

He quoted a study which found that regular running would increase your life span by five years. Unfortunately, you had to run for a total time of five years to live five years longer!!

As I'm driving and see people running, all done up in the latest spandex and three hundred dollar running shoes, I think about it. :D

And when I see the pained expressions on their faces...Hokey Dinnah!! Five years of that???

Dr. Christiaan Barnard was asked about the benefits of jogging for the heart, and had an answer truly worthy of Literotica: "You can visit a woman in leather with a whip and get the same effect with a lot more pleasure."

No plastic skeletons good enough for your class, eh?

My kind of doctor!!

Actually, the real problem is tomatoes. Every person known to have ingested a tomato, prior to 1890 is now dead. A 100% mortality rate. Yet. people still continue to ingest tomatoes.

Nix on the real sugar but the rest have already gotten the dietary poo-bah's okay. Coffee is a positive good and a little bacon never hurt anyone. Eggs are among the most nutritious things you can eat. The cholesterol that plugs your arteries comes predominantly from your own liver. It's part of you immune system.

For a real sugar substitute that tastes good and has no chemical after taste, try agave syrup. It's glycemic index is so low that the FDA recommends it for diabetics.

For a breakfast treat, I heartily recommend low sodium, high fiber, zero cholesterol, no trans fat lawn grass, with honey. Mmmmmm...

I like a ham and cheese omelet, tomato juice and some fruit, either canned or fresh.

I also like whole wheat pancakes.

Scrambled eggs and bratwurst and fruit.

How about poached eggs over a bowl of navy beans with bacon and onions?

To be honest, with summer coming on, cold fried chicken!

It funny how just two oz of Jamison's can make your evening mellow.

Pass the pretzels, please. :)
