The Earth Day 2011 Contest Support Thread

Hm would nature spirits be sci-fi/fantasy or non-human?

Most often, if one of the primary characters is a non-human, you're better off going with that category for the increased views.

My first Wood story went into Non-human because one of the primary characters was a full nymph. All the subsequent stories went into Sci-Fi/Fantasy because the stories center on the kids, who aren't full-blooded dryads.

Hm, darn, I put my nature spirits-type story in Fantasy... Although, they do appear human, so I guess non-human might be a bit of false hope.

I debated it a lot with the first sequel to Steward of the Wood. While the kids/grandkids/great-grandkids all look essentially human, my storyline has the nymph blood breeding pretty true.

Females have no body hair. Males have only the sparsest patches. All of them have extrodinary lifespans and resistance to the normal rigors of age/disease ( though she doesn't appear, Xanbrina would be around 70 in the current storyline, but would easily pass for 40s ) None of them are fertile except on Earth Day.

And that's only what I've revealed so far *laugh* Subsequent stories are going to show that there's more than even they know, further distancing them from human.

In the end, I decided that they looked human, and that the traits I've revealed so far ( other than the aging ) aren't far enough outside normal parameters to meet the Non-Human category.

Once I write the story I've been building groundwork for in the background with the last two stories, I'll have to debate the category again. Odds are that story will end up in Non-human, because it's going to go well outside the range of normal and into the magical.

These damn categories! *grr* Well, for the most part she's humanoid. So...I've posted stories in both categories. I'll have to give it some thought once I finish writing it.

I haven't actually read any nature spirit/nymph/dryad stories yet. So, once mine is up and posted I'm going to love delving into all of yours!

Thanks guys. :cattail:

Thanks for taking the time to do all that statistical information. Being the numbers guy that I am, I find this stuff interesting.

So I find these comments on my story, Lost in the Woods today:

The names...

I'm going to have to equally agree about those names. Woof. The writing was solid but, Fern, Willow, Holly, Clay, Ivy!?!

I loved the story, but I had a hard time getting over the names you chose for most of the characters. I understand that this story was your Earth Day entry, but did the names have to be types of trees and plants?

It's an EARTH DAY story, and a light one at that. The names were part of the fun. I am stumped (haha) that people didn't get it. Ah well.

I was a bit worried about the names in my story, but it seems that no one bothered to see what they are, and since I used foreign translations, it didn't take anyone out of the story. Still, I'm surprised no one minded Primavera, it always seems a bit sticky to me.

Matt, I thought the names in yours were fine. Primavera made me smile, and Ebul was neat although I kept thinking how it was "lube" backwards. I used a lot of earth and plant names and I guess some people didn't quite get it.

I've got a story pending that I didn't enter in the Earth Day contest. Even though both the story and the female characters' names are all flowers it has nothing to do with the contest. I still think it's one of my better ones, though.

I've been thinking it'd be fun to do a story like that, but then I keep thinking of the Britcom Keeping up Appearances.

I had some difficulty getting my story entered, but I finally succeeded. The site didn't seem to want to accept it, for some reason.

In this story women named after flowers is both a tradition in the family and a reference to their business . . . and they ain't no florists, neither.

It has six views already, and is still not posted. I wonder if this one will pile up dozens of pre-posting views the way others have done lately.

Probably. I submitted mine at nine this morning, and it's been ticking up two at a time ever since. It's at 24 now.

Everyone else has talked about it, so it wasn't a surprise... but it's still weird to see.
