For the late-night crew

Kook, try a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water.

I'm not so sure about these other ideas that all involve putting more acid in the system.

I see this thread and I get...all...you know...
(I told myself I wouldn't cry)

Me too. And self-deception is a root of evil.

Don't for god's sake read the whole thing again. We'll both be weeping all night.

It's weird, but adding acid to the stomach helps with some heartburn.....

Yes, like 2 times.

I'm glad that being pregnant coincides with giving birth more than having heartburn does.
I'm a boy, you see, and have had heartburn on average about once a month for the past few years. I couldn't afford all those kids.
Though it occurs to me I'd be mondo famous.
I have no help for heartburn other than Thor's suggestion of a hearty eructation.

Call it cognitive dissonance and the pointy heads will let us get away with it.

Kicks the buffers into overdrive, maybe.

Well, adjusts them. The pH of stomach acid is very low, so when you add a different acid of slightly higher pH to the system the buffers, till then responding to a very acidic environment, have to adjust and as such the acid production is reduced and the buffering is modulated. A little like the advice not to use cream on dry skin because you interrupt the skin's natural lubrication; if, like in the stomach example, you make the skin even dryer the natural lubrication is kicked up.

Wait...pH is low...where it's supposed to be. Adding a higher-pH acid causes lowered acid production...which causes buffer system to...

I still don't see it. Gimme a base to neutralize the acid.

In any case, the problem of heartburn isn't the pH; it's the effect of the acid on tissue. I'm wondering if those acidic folk cures don't somehow prevent reflux into the esophagus.
Must be a XC skier Freudian thing......

"Whip It" is a standard.......

It's got a great rhythm for swinging the arms.

Firefly is always a good time.......

Watching it now after a few years since last I saw it is causing me to notice a few things I may not have seen before...and, too, it is perfectly recalling to mind exactly where I was and what I was doing the first time I saw it.

I don't think I knew you were a fan, Thor...?

Sticking with the proscription?

Hadn't been. Started in again this very day (in the midst of massive temptation doing laundry at Shae's house).
If lifelong friends can do me the favor and not drop dead it just might stick this time.

Natural buffers are balanced against your own acid production...though imperfectly, at times, leading to heartburn.
Add an external source of acidity and the buffers amp up, but also, more importantly, your own acid production decreases.

I'll see what I can do. My uncle died last night. I kinda know where you're at, but nowhere near the same magnitude in terms of loss.

That makes somewhat more sense to me. I need to look into what it is that drives buffering. If it's pH, then adding a dilute/higher pH acid shouldn't work.
