Would this work?

I've been thinking about getting into writting again, and often read stuff from this site. Its pretty much what sparked my bug.

I've had an idea for a story, but have been toying with writing in a style I am not sure has been done before or works well.

Essentially, originally I was going to do it as a mock blog, write the main character making entries to tell to story. But the constant media barrage of Twitter got me to thinking... could it work. I'm not proposing writing the entire thing in 140 char tweets, but rather having periods where he the character is not able to write a blog and so updates through that form.

However, its going to take quite alot of work and I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort. So looking for some popular opinion, do you think it would work. Obviously it would be heavily dependant on the writing quality and story, but as a general concept would it be something you could see yourself being interested it?

I would think it would be just as hard to read as to write. It's done in short passages within stories now. But there's no harm in experimenting, so go ahead and try it and see how it works out.

Treat it like poetry, making every word count. If it works, it might work very well. If it doesn't work it doesn't.

I love writing in a very, very short format. You might want to look at some of Og's 15x50 stories. He's very, very good at it.

I think it could work.

I would research Twitter so that you could use the entries to your best advantage; get to knows its "language" of trending, namedropping etc. I would not use many Twitter updates though. I'd use it as a novelty because its storytelling function is limited.

You might consider online messenger conversation "transcripts" as well.

This sounds quite a bit like writing inthe Letters and Transcripts category.

That is exactly the format I used for my story Putting the Madge in Danna. It is a fictitious blog.

What about a chat room format?

You may be able to do it justice. For me specifically I have tried to read 10 or 15 stories that were written as email or IM exchanges. I just could not get into any of them.

"So maybe it is just him because he does not understand." You may think. I met a woman on the net 11 years ago and we exchanged emails, IMs and a few phone calls. I would estimate 95% of our talking was done via email or IM. We will celebrate our 6th Wedding Anniversary in about 2 weeks.

So it is not about the medium it is about the presentation.

Just my thoughts. Should you think it will fly give it a try. I am willing to do the same.

Good luck.

It’s a writing style that I would not have thought to use. So, why not give it your best shot?

If it bombs, it bombs. That’s the risk we all take when we write something and put it out there for public consumption and criticism.

Good luck!
