I am new to writing. I never wrote anything before coming to this site.
When one gets private feedback, both positives and negatives, is it considered good manner to send back a short Thank You or is it considered a pain in the neck?
Even the negative feedback, many times contain criticism that are worth considering carefully in order to improve one's writings in the future.
I read them all very carefully, positives and negatives.
Merci

I try to respond to any private feedback that isn't beligerent or dismissive.

Of course you will have to consider the source of those comments very carefully before responding.

One way to tell if a response is called for is to determine who the comment is from. If it is from that asshole Anonymous there is no need to respond, even though he may comment on your story a number of times, both publicly and privately. ;)

Depends on the "creepy" vibe I get. Some make me shudder and hit delete as fast as I can. I don't answer anonymous at all, but then some are quite thoughtfully written or tickle me in some way so I feel they deserve a response.

I respond to feedback that is not from Anon. Some of it is pretty creepy, like from men who say they have the hots for their daughters or women or girls who have the hots for their fathers or those who think it's a shame that a rapist was foiled. I have very few of those, because I seldom write about rape.

Generally speaking, I answer feedback when a question is asked or feel like thanking the reader for their feedback. I don't usually respond to comments. Every now and then I may reply to one. Of course the reader has to sent you an e-mail address or their name to reply to the feedback/comment.

Just play it by ear. If you feel like commenting, then do so. I have found with some readers that their comment never end. Just do what you feel is right, and good luck with your writing.

I respond to any feedback if they leave contact information. Most of the time I only thank them for their comment. If they ask a question or comment about a specific part of the story, I try to answer as best I can.

Over the years, thousands of people will click on a story. Of those, only a handful take the time to comment. It is worth my time to answer.

Thanks to all who took the time to answer my question.
I was a bit shy about answering private feed backs, did not want to be a pain in neck to anyone. I will in future handle that better
Merci Mesdames et Messieurs

As other already said, the line to take is whether they, a) provide an address and b)wrote something useful. If there's no way to reply (though you can always add your own feedback to your own stories), don't bother. If the feedback did have a return address and was useful (even if negative) then you owe them - and should pay up.

People who give feedback, even when negative, are what we writers are here for.

The e-mailers who give me the vapors are the ones who ask questions and you take time to respond to them only to find that the e-mail they gave Lit. was a fake.
