The Authors' Hangout 2010 Halloween Contest Support Thread

Presumably the "Similar Story" listings have tags in common. But they often give me (and I'm sure others) a chuckle by how far off the wall they are. I wouldn't hyperventilate over them, though. Just one of those bells and whistles that we didn't particularly need.

I question if there is such a thing as "the true opinion of the readers" given their diversity. We can define a statistic that represents the "true opinion" but it will only do so because we've agreed that it defines it. And remember, basing statistics on large numbers does not guarantee validity. If I measure the size of my desk with a yardstick that's only 33 inches long, yet reads 36 inches, I'll always get the wrong answer, no matter how many times I repeat the measurement. The question is whether or not the measuring tool is correct..

Your frequent griping about Lit in general and your fantasy awards tells me that you're not at all at ease with accepting your ratings, regardless of the sample size.

I've read enough of your posts to know that your logic is sometimes flawed, and that you're an accomplished whiner/venter yourself. That's not meant as a personal attack, simply a statement that you can be frustrated much like anyone else here, and that you do show it. Which is why it does seem a contradiction to me when you take someone to task for doing just what you do.

The solution to your question is obvious: Ask them. Most of them are still around. If you're not willing to do some research and instead are happy to speculate, you're doomed to follow whatever garden path you choose, and you'll never know if you've chosen the right one. Take some of the considerable energy you put into your forum activity and find out if what you think is actually correct. Until you do that, you make yourself look like you're afraid of what you might learn. If you want to create change, you need to work. ..

but no one takes those speculations seriously until someone does the work to test them. When those speculations are essentially complaints, it's whining …

The statement in your first paragraph seems petty and diversionary … although the argument would have been more amusing if you’d used penis length in your example. Something about measuring pussy capacity with either a 5” or 9” dick perhaps?

“Fantasy awards”? Did you really write fantasy awards? The world of erotic literature has been captured by A.I.R. and its great work.

As to my ratings I’ve always been delighted with them from almost the first day I showed up here. I’ve always translated the 4 and 4.5 ratings to the schoolboy report cards 80% and 90% - percentages I so very frequently achieved (to the chagrin of my saintly mom).

“Scourian logic” flawed? IMPOSSIBLE!

Perhaps the distinction I make between my whining/venting/criticizing and that of the typical og man thread ventors is that they’re generally whining about their score while mine is usually more issue directed criticizing. i.e. – my score is too low vs. all scores are too high. Or why can’t I sneak in a chaptered story (a la jayman or db) vs. chaptered stories have an unfair advantage and should be disqualified.

As to “asking them” – I have. Both publicly on the forums and privately. Invariably the answer I’ve received is – “why waste time and energy on contests that aren’t fair.”

It’s the reason the A.I.R. AWARDS have become so popular.

I guess we've had a sweep or two. Lost a lot of votes but didn't affect the scores much.

No, scouries, your awards aren't fantasy, they are pure farce.

As for “Scourian logic”, there is not such thing. If it doesn't stroke your ego than it is not worth your time. Reread what you posted above and my point is made perfectly.

Quote Scouries...."As to “asking them” – I have. Both publicly on the forums and privately. Invariably the answer I’ve received is – “why waste time and energy on contests that aren’t fair.”

That is a load of crap and you know it. If any of them answered you at all, it was to tell you to buzz off and/or take me off your bullshit lists. You've tried to use the real writers on this site to make you look good for way too long. They don't like it. You are a pain in the ass and your ego is way over bloated for what you do or rather what you don't do, which is to learn to write stories readers want to read.

Keep putting out the BS, it makes my job of showing people who and what you are so much easier.

I'm hovering right around 3.80. Apparently people here want to read smut. Who knew?

Ditto. A huge number of votes gone but virtually no change in score. Kind of odd. Looked like a little sweep a few days ago. Much smaller number of votes gone, much bigger change in score. At least on my stories.

Do they have any tags in common? That might make the computer think they're similar.

ETA: answered my own question. No tags in common. Maybe it just randomly picks five other Halloween entries. I don't know.

I've seen some odd matches on the Similar Stories also. Maybe it's based on keywords within the story/chapter being read that generates it.

Scouries, that helped clear things up. Thanks. I thought it had to do with the tags as well. It wasn't a trick question either. But, maybe it is random. Each time I have looked at my comments, there are different "Similar Stories" there.

Here, here!
The only real reason to join the contest is to have a little fun, and maybe promote your other stories a little better.

I haven't shaken fists to heaven, though I have shaken my head quite a bit, at stories more popular and rated higher than mine, but so what? I'm going to continue to write the way I write. I like it, and so do some others.

(
FWIW, here's my cautionary tale.

I joined here in '03 thinking it would be fun to share some of what I've written and maybe win a little cash in a contest. I got caught up in the points and the scores and that first contest started my descent into madness. *cue ominous music*

I would look at my scores--really good ones, too--and despair that even though I'd have a 4.7-something, I was still five pages away from being anywhere near the top of the ratings pile in any category. I got to thinking that getting top scores was an impossible task for me because my writing just wasn't good enough.

Then I'd read stories with better scores than mine and I'd shake my fist at the heavens because my stories were so much better and it just wasn't fair, especially in contests that I should have won, dammit! In the end I was just so caught up with what other people thought of my stories that I stopped focusing on the stories themselves, and for me that proved to be a very bad thing.

Of course, my muse said, "Fuck this," and walked off in a huff. Luring him back has taken a long time. And he made me promise to remember that when it comes to our relationship, "winning" is not only not everything, it's not anything.

So while I'm not saying that getting caught up in the spirit of competition is automatically a bad thing, I just wanted to put my own experience out there just in case anyone was feeling like they needed a reality check. And if not, well, carry on then. Once more into the breach, dear friends...

:rose: It was a cute story and that last line left me wondering. I do think part of the problem is that people can't see the category from the story contest list. They may go in expecting scary and sex.

Oh, I didn't expect for it to do very well, but I had that first line and the last line and they refused to go away until I wrote a story to go between them.

this is it

I think maybe the big sweeps are coming up. Lost a lot of votes in the last few hours but score remained pretty much the same.

From here on in it's a bumpy ride... (the best kind?)

I was almost afraid to check my story this morning after reading Dr Hear's post and the one from the good Texan. Invariably when one of the two reports big vote losses mine are similarily affected.

But when I checked just now I found that so far I've escaped the palaces scythe (mind you it's probably only a matter of time).

Brother Cucks Brother: Or Does He? Who's the father of Caitlyn's baby?
4.43 rating 762 votes

I hate not knowing going in if this is going to be one of those contests with minimal sweeps or one with widespread carnage...

I've always tried to give you the benefit of a doubt. I always held out hope the there was a sane person somewhere inside this delusional dreamworld you've created. Silly me. You've quite clearly made the point that my optimism was wrong. How many did you speak to directly? All your comments make it difficult to believe you did anything but talk to a couple and selectively listen to their responses. Silly me to think you even tried to be open to other reasons. Had I been able to enter the Summer Lovin' contest, it would have been with a science fiction story

Then perhaps it was a stroke of god. Even he doesn’t like Sci-Fi stories…

And it doesn’t sound like you were giving me the “benefit of a doubt” as I read your characterization. Sane? Delusional?

As to your “how many did you speak to directly” question the answer is simple – Over the last 2 or 3 years we’ve had an over eighty per cent return on our various surveys of the top twenty-five MOST FAVORITE AUTHORS. Not only have we surveyed them on the contest question but Gabby, through her presidency of both the 1000+ VOTE CLUB and the 100+ COMMENT CLUB, has had extensive dealings with the LITEROTICA greats.

Combine this with our annual club get-togethers and our biannual writing education courses and I feel I can report that I’ve got my finger on the pulse of the big boys.

And what they’re reporting is that they are no longer prepared to breathe air into the LITEROTICA contest corpse. Of course they respect the fact that I have contractual obligations to fulfill.

Gabby is one of scouries many alts and there is no such thing as the 1000+ VOTE CLUB or the 100+ COMMENT CLUB. Both are fake lists made up by scouries so his name can be associated with real writers. So gabby can't associate with anyone except scouries.

This is just an outright lie.Nothing about the above statement is true.

Contractual obligations to whom? You are no different than any other writer on a free porn site. You've lied about this for years.

Scouries, quit lying to people.

Last Place contest is nearly upon us

Authors' Hangout 2010 Halloween Last Place (tm) Contest

Rules for Last Place contest.
****

Order for coming last:

Lowest voted rating for a genuine attempt at a story multiplied by number of votes if less than 25 divided by 25.

So - if rating is 3.00 but only 12 votes the score would be

3.00 x 12 / 25 = 1.44

If rating is 3.00 but more than 25 votes, the rating stays the same.

I suggest ignoring number of reads except as a tie breaker when least number of reads would *win*.
****

Since the 'winner' actually wins nothing, it is pointless to cheat. To enter, all you have to do is declare your rating and votes at the time the real contest is decided.

Participation is entirely voluntary.

Og is banned from entry for life because he finds coming last too easy and is a past multiple winner of last places.

For the last place contest, 1 votes are very valuable and 5s are bombs.

Og (whose decision is final unless you all gang up on me)

Here's an early congratulations to the real winner and to the real loser.

Great attitude!! I tip my hat to you! I hope you are planning to enter the Holiday Contest as well! I'll be joining in for the ride on that one and look forward to getting to know you better!

All the best in this contest, but you're right - you already won - congrats!!!

I've been swept too. It sorta tickled!

Wow, I got swept too.. and lost some point-age.
(Not gonna say how much because if I see one more math equation I'm gonna
jab myself in the eye with a dull pencil.) :p ;)

Almost done!

Good luck everyone.. and congratulations to every single person that entered.
You're all winners in my eyes!  *bats eyelashes* (lol)

I'm waiting for the big sweep after the voting closes. The mini-sweep bumped my score up a little, but then it just got bashed again straight after.

That's the downside to being ahead on the Erotic Horror 30 days toplist - makes it an obvious target. :)

Not that it matters. The score is too low to place. It's scored better than I expected, so I'm happy about that.
