Vermonters Want Cross Removed… From Chapel!

Richard Downing and his wife Joan used to light up their 24-foot cross outside of their chapel during holy seasons. The town's development review board has already limited the number of days it can be lit up, and now officials want the cross taken down entirely.

"They felt that because of aesthetics it did not meet the character of the neighborhood, and so therefore, should not be there at all," said Municipal Manager Dan Hill of the Act 250 decision.

The Downings are appealing both rulings. They told Newschannel 5 that they are trying to appease neighbors by offering to plant trees around the cross, investing in dimmer lights and blocking out the light on certain sides of the cross. They want the cross to stay standing, and to be lit during Advent, Lent, and Mary's birthday.

"If it was a commercial thing and just any old sign, that would be fine," said Richard Downing, "But this is a cross. It's an integral part of any Catholic church. I've never seen a Catholic church that didn't have a cross on it."

Neighbors and town officials said the objection is not religious, and mostly concerns the lighting. But the Downings said the rulings have become an obstacle to their religious practices.

Can't you just put up a normal cross?

Last I checked, the "True" cross never glowed, it was made of plain old wood.

see, if we had a real man in office, aka bush or Jeb Bush then the army could invade Vermont and restore that state

In case anyone thinks this cross is something gaudy, out of place, and overdone, here is a picture of it.

The libnutz get away with oppressing Christians and Jews because they don't threaten you with death. Only Muslims threaten you with death for exercising your freedoms.

I can imagine how that would be annoying.

... And seriously, we don't OPPRESS Judeo-Christians, all we want to do is make sure YOU don't use superior regional manpower to opress them.

Muslims have just as many rights as everybody else, but no more. When a Muslim community starts sending out prayer calls over a loadspeaker, they are just as guilty as the giant-cross builders.

no doubt LIBZ will turn themselves into pretzels why THIS CROSS is a problem and the GMZ TERROR PLANNING HOUSE isnt!

First off, if you want to have a logical conversation, please stop calling teh Ground Zero Islamic Cultural Center a TERROR PLANNING HOUSE, it's attitudes like that which send American Muslims into the Radicals' hands.

Now, for your answer. You seem to forget that the neighbors said the problems wasen't with the fact that it was a cross, but the fact that it was too bright. Just set up a wooden cross there, it's a nice compromise.

It should be taken down. What if some iSlammers came to town? It might offend them. If they get offended, they might fly some more airplanes into buildings. Better appease the iSlammers -- just be be fair... and stay on the safe side.

When will it get into your head that not all Muslims are anti-american crazies?

Heck, we even have a good number of them in our militery.

When the peaceful majority muslims can't feel safe around us, then it stands to reason that they will look for safty with out enemies.

"The enemy of my enemy is my freind"

You are obviously a newbie. I will make it easy on you: No, you will not change his mind.

Not all Nazis were bad. Some even tried to kill Hitler. I saw the movie. So, we need to show tolerance toward National Socialism and respect its customs and culture, right?

Same deal.

Yes, we must respect National Socialist beleifs, but not PLACE IT HIGHER then any other system of beleifs under the law. If somebody protests at a N.S rally, then they have the same protection as if they protest at Tea Party rally, or a Communist rally, or what have you.

Showing respect to and become are two different things. I respect Conservatives, but no way in (insert name of negative afterlife you choose to beleive in, or some negative location if you do not beleive in any form of negative afterlife here) am I going to become one or submit to one by force

Compared to you, yes I am a newbie.

THe question wasen't ment for him, but rather as informative for everybody else about how stubborn and deluded he is.
