I know this is a long shot but I remember there was a cop show with two cops and one was hispanic and young and the other guy was older and had a son and the hispanic guy I think left the show at one point... but i had a big crush on him...anybody have any idea?

Uniformed? Partners in a squad car? California-ish?

Barney Miller?

Although, from the list that fuckwaffle provided, I'd hazard the guess that it's CHiPs. (which was actually my first guess)
Erik Estrada played the hispanic cop. He went on strike for seven episodes because of a contract issue.

Jenny

PS: There was a Puerto Rican on Barney Miller during the first two seasons...

The New Adam-12 (1990) featured a hispanic officer, but I don't think I ever watched a complete episode.

Adrian Zmed isn't hispanic, but his tenure on TJ Hooker (1982-1986) fits your description of leaving the show -- as well as "having a big crush on him" since nearly every young woman in the US had a crush on him at the peak of the show's popularity.

It was probably CHiPs. Erik Estrada was a major heartthrob for young women but, judging from what I heard and read about him, especially the way he treated his wife, he was also a major asshole. :(

Eric Estrada is still making a living off being a caricature of "Ponch," like Cheech, he's awfully well known to be forgotten. His partner in the show, "John," wasn't notably older than "Ponch" and unless it was late in the series didn't have a son that I recall.

CHiPs doesn't really fit the "lesser known" part of the thread title either.

One of the stars of 'Homicide' was Jimmy Smits...he set a few female hearts aflutter.

it was the early 90s

i like adriane zmed...from greece 2 tho!
Made in the early 90's or is that just when you were exposed to the show in syndication?

IIRC, there were a lot of revival cop shows in the early 90's -- New Adam 12, New Dragnet, a New Mod Squad, et al. Most of them lasted less than two years because a) they were bad shows that deserved to die; b) nobody who remembered the originals would watch them; or c) both.

They tend to be hard to find because the older (original) shows are what show up on search functions first or they're considered as part of the same series with just a long hiatus between the original air dates and the last few seasons.

Michael DeLorenzo (born October 31, 1959) is an American actor, director and musician. He is best known for his portrayal of NYPD Detective Eddie Torres on the Fox Thursday night mid-1990s television series New York Undercover.

:D Glad I could help!

I'm pretty good at remembering most the American TV shows from the 80's and 90's. Also, NYU sticks in my mind because I first saw the actor that played Torres as one of the students on Head of the Class which I really liked as a kid.
