In light of this being the type of forum that it is, I leave the thread title up for interpretation.;)

Personally...
I'm considering joining the Appalachian Mountain Club. I'd really like to get into paddling, and kayaking, but I'm not sure where to start.

What type of boat should I start with? How do I learn proper form?

I've rowed in an 8, and a 4 person crew boat, but that was in college. I think kayaking would work better with my schedule in that I could potentially do it alone.

Any thoughts, or experiences?

BTW-the AML seems to have lots of other coordinated activities such as hiking which I'd really like to do in a group setting.

What are your favorite outdoor activities?

I like paddling, but never tried it as an outdoor activity

I hear *cough* (cuz I personally wouldn't know) that the non-rowing type of paddling can be fun outdoors, especially if you have a bit of an exhibishionist in you.;)

If you're in the NE, and looking for paddling info, go here: http://www.npmb.com/cms2/e107_plugins/forum/forum.php

It's an active community of river rats, and quite helpful.

Dragon boat.

Like this Dragon Boat?

If that's the case, I think I said earlier that I'm looking to row in a boat powered by only myself.

Oh that message board doesn't allow email addys from certain websites. Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail are not "valid", so I had to fill out an "alternate" form, and wait 48 hrs to see if I'm approved to join this particular message board.

No, you didn't. You said that you think it might be more handy for you regarding your schedules.

And you said:
"the AML seems to have lots of other coordinated activities such as hiking which I'd really like to do in a group setting."
which is a contradiction.

You know what? You're right. Forget the kayak, dragonboating is the life for me!

Does fucking in the woods counts as outdoor activity?

Cuz it's the only activity that came on my mind, somehow. lol

I was into all sorts of outdoors activities when I was younger.

MUCH younger. I was a Cub Scout, Webelos, Boy Scout, when my sons were old enough we went that route with them as well. Did the camping with the scout troops, we went camping on vacations, hiking mountain trails, spelunking, canoeing, fishing, all that stuff. As soon as they outgrew it, I said "No mas!"

I'm too old to be sleeping on the ground in a tent, sweating or freezing my ass off at night, fighting insects, snakes, and the occasional rummaging bear for my meals. Cooking over a Coleman, hoping I don't run out of fuel and/or a fire holds no romantic notions for me anymore.

Motel Six and McDonalds are my idea of roughing it now. Of course my enthusiasm waned a good bit when I let my ex- keep all the camping stuff to use with the boys. Hmmmm.... I will, however, go outside to shoot skeet, and engage in other shooting sports. Things that go bang are still fun for me. And last fall I took Tori into a cave for her first time seriously underground... I might could be cajoled into some canoeing again too. But I'm drawing a hard line in the sand with tent camping. I'll do cabins but I am NOT sleeping on the ground ever again if I can help it. :p

Does banging my girl on a picnic bench at the Zoo count as an outdoor activity?

Sex whilst mountaineering has to be near top of my list. (The sun does occasionally shine on Scottish mountains.) Raw needy fucking watched only by ptarmigan and eagles. And more in the bothy at night, if there's any privacy...

Something from my past, but I'll return to it yet with my partner...

Outdoor activities. Bzzzzzz, misquotes! I'm just thinking out loud here, but are the little blood suckers related to vampires? If so, why are they so much easier to kill?

Yeah, it would be the only activity that came to mind for you. LOL
Is it just me or do you get even more amorous whenever you're pregnant.:D JD must have a ball with you.

I guess I'm looking to feel inspired by something, and to be healthier. I've always found great solace, and inner quiet when I'm focusing myself physically on an activity that I enjoy. I like being outdoors. Running on a treadmill indoors has never held my attention for long.

Although your idea of roughing it - McD's and Motel 6 reminds me of one of my previous "relationships". We'd have hours and hours worth of loud, rough sex at the Motel 6, and would only leave long enough to stop for food at the McD's across the street. Ahh memories...

That was a dirty, dirty relationship, but oh so much fun.

Oooh Ptarmigan. That's hawt.

LOL.

IMO Vampires are easier to kill, or at least to defend yourself against. -Just takes one steak, I mean STAKE to the heart, and Vlad goes down. Mosquitoes can carry disease, and are greater in numbers. Even if you kill a mosquito, once it's bitten you, you may still have contracted west nile or something.

Cause they're so small. If vampires were as small as mosquitoes, then we'd be able to squish them, too.

You know what I was just thinking? (And I'm suuuure you wanna know too.)

Well, first I was thinking about tiny vampires, and how they'd automatically be full of blood, so if you squished 'em they'd prolly POP!

Then I thought about fairies...

I wonder what it looks like if you squish one...or put one in the microwave. I mean, I would NEVER, but I did wonder. -Just for a second.
 Don't tell Betticus I just said that!

Get bitten by a vampire, the only things that can hurt you are silver bullets, direct sunlight and wooden stakes...if I remember my vampire movies well enough. Oh, and don't forget garlic!

Bitten by a mosquito, you could get malaria or west nile or some other blood carried disease...you might actually die. If nothing else, you scratch the spot until you go crazy.

I don't think so. Well, you maybe can squish them, but does that kill them? I think they regenerate or something, don't they? Read my previous post so I don't have to retype. Only certain things bother vampires, right?

Before you make any big purchases, look for clubs built around your prospective hobby. Some people I know got into kayaking by joining the university club. They didn't have to buy anything for a year or so until they were skilled enough to go on river trips. Even then, they still used the groups boats, they just bought PFDs, helmets, etc. They finally bought their own boats after determining what they wanted, etc.

And, especially with a hobby like kayaking, you want to make sure you know how to do so SAFELY.

I used to kayak a lot, have owned a couple of them in my time. I'd be happy to answer questions.

I'd gone pretty much the same route, and drawn the same conclusion. But just a couple of weeks ago, I went on a reunion trip with my sons' old Scout troop and the guys who were leaders with me. Everyone is an adult now. We did some whitewater and some camping, but now we could knock back a couple of shots of bourbon around the campfire and bullshit like adults. You can't believe what a good time that was.
