Well I had a jolly good one. Three cheers for the Sun! Ra Ra Ra

Well, you sure got my ATEN-tion.

It is surprising, given all the sexual celebrations that accompany it around the world.

So I know what I'll be doing (well, hope to be doing) at 11:28 tonight...:D

Hmpf! All possible 'other' candidates live clear across the country. My only other option would be to pay for it and I am one cheap bear!

It's too depressing. There's reason to celebrate the Winter Solstice but the Summer version is the zenith and apogee; there's nowhere to go from here but down.

After I'm elected Fascist Emperor of the Americas all you Usual Suspects and Libertarian Lemmings can count on spending lotsa time out in the Sun...and snow.

But you miss the point, trysail...At Winter Solstice, the Sun is in danger of being extinguished, so we have lights and fires and drunken revellry and unrestrained sex to keep it with us. At Summer Solstice, we are in danger of burning up from Old Sol's approaching too closely; then we have bonfires and drunken revellry and unrestrained sex to push it away from us.

In Quebec, it's even a religio-political celebration: The Feast of our Patron Saint, John the Baptist, is on the 24th of June; we celebrate this "National" Day with bonfires, drunken revellry and unrestrained sex. You still have time to join the party!:D

I think I'm beginning to see a theme here. :D

It's too damned hot to celebrate anything here, except maybe air conditioning.

I don't know Tx, after all, Texas has quite a connection with Quebec. Our great explorer, Robert de la Salle, died in Texas in 1687. He was trying to return to the mouth of the Mississippi, which he had been the first European to explore, but missed it because longitude hadn't been worked out yet and his latitude was a bit off. He landed near Galveston and told his men that they would walk the "few leagues" to the Mississippi. They disagreed and wanted to sail home, so he scuttled his ship (arcaeologists have recovered it). In turn they assassinated him. Well, what did you expect from a French international team? Mutiny is an integral part of their history.

So, either celebrate there (in the 'cool' of the night), or come on up here, to restore the unity of Texas and Quebec in bonfires, drunken revellry, and unrestrained sex.

A trip that way is already on the list for after retirement in a couple of years. I've already got the motorcycle, just waiting to do the trike conversion.

Well, then, if I'm still here, I'd be happy to show you around.:D

When the time comes, I hope a lot of people have that attitude. Over time, I have covered a lot of the US and a small portion of Canada. Most of it in a hurry going somewhere. With retirement, I plan to take my time and really see this country and as much of yours as I can.

ETA: the reason for the trike is two fold. One is to carry all my camping supplies and the second is comfort for my old achy body. Camping I've always enjoyed but friends along the way will be a nice change.

I know the feeling, Tx. We tend to do 2,000 - 8,000 mile road trips in the summer. Ah, the academic life! The pay isn't what I would have had on Wall Street, but the time that's my own is priceless.

Money isn't everything but don't tell anyone I said that. :D

Over the years I could have made three times what I make now if I had stayed in Electrical Engineering. But then again, I'd be crazier than I am now. Too many chiefs and no Indians as the saying goes. I like the freedom of my job. Lots of hours but I call the shots for the most part and I only have one person to answer to.

That was the story of my life, too. Before I joined the ed biz, my constant plaint was 'don't pay me more money, give me more time off!' And retirement is even better.

The Earth is closest to the Sun nearer the Winter Solstice, perihelion. Aphelion is July 6th. Axial tilt is less interesting.
