Count down to 2012?

We're poised to experience calamity if something comes ashore at the wrong place and the wrong time.

No, this is a human problem. We're doing this to ourselves.

I don't think so--I think it's primarily the forces of nature, which are maybe being exacerbated by human actions, but they are there anyway and capable of massive natural destruction. Our "problem," I think, is in thinking we can either master or ignore the power of nature--when it's really bigger than we can get (or are willing/able to resource) our hands around and we should be melding to it.

The epitome I see in this in my own region are the folks building and then rebuilding and rebuidling again giant expensive homes on the Nags Head outer bank beaches--and then expecting insurance companies and the government to underwrite building again each time they get knocked down by natural forces.

Same stupid shit at Malibu. All those celebrity beach front homes are built in an area zoned against construction. But they just throw enough money around the Building Commission and get a variance. Then, when the Pacific decides to get even, swarms of feeble-minded fans rush down to fill sandbags and 'save' the homes. Fuck 'em. I hope the houses and all their contents wash away. And if the celebrity washes away, too, I will shed only a very small tear, if that.

I saw the picture and then found MSNBC had a slide show of the Storm Damage in Guatamala.

Rain, Wind, Floods , are the Gods Angry? Great Holes in the Ground!

Read the Popul Vuh, and recognize that the Underworld is constantly creating new entries...not surprising, given the geology of the region. Maybe we should sacrifice a few virgins in a sacred cenote?

I hope it waits until August; we're heading to Rodanthe in July. We are reasonable, though; barrier islands naturally move with storms and tides, and we'd never expect them to stay put just for us.

Yep, it's the start of the Apocalypse. We better start twiddling the wood, bow the arrows, collect canned peas, water and matches, get a map to that seed suppository in Norway and procreate as much as possible, and I do mean as much as possible. The end is NIGH!
