Been looking into doing a tandem jump.

Thing is, in the past couple of years, I have developed a fear of heights. But, I got nothing to lose.

I just signed up online to do it.

So, in a couple of weeks........

Anyone out there done it?

I had 35 or so Military jumps and one civilian. It is a lot of fun, if everything works. Riggers know their trade and chutes are very reliable.

I liked the view, You'll probably jump from a good altitude so you'll have lots of time to look around. But it will be over too fast.

Altitude and heights are different I found. Roof tops scare me, but 1,500-5,000 feet is interesting.

Papa Bear flew Air Transport Command out of Ft. Benning in WWII. His opinion, which I share, was that there was no reason to get out of an airplane so long as it was still flying.

First off, talk to your partner. Know who they are, let them reassure you that all will be well and they have done this a thousand times before. Because you won't feel comfortable jumping out of a plane with someone who doesn't put you at ease first.

Secondly, don't think about the height. Seriously. Once you're out of the flying contraption and the wind has stopped pulling at you, it's like you're floating over an immense fan. There's this great big hand pushing up against you, and you feel it across your cheeks and hands (or more, depending on what you wear) like a sandpaper feather duster. Your face will go a little numb, but you won't even notice because you're wondering how the fuck you're actually flying.

Once this sensation passes, however, you'll realize you're falling. Fast. The ground comes up toward you like Peewee Herman on a video closeup. But if you trust your partner, it'll be like coming down the long slope of a roller coaster. You know it's not gonna kill ya, but it'll scare the shit outta you and thrill you at the same time.

Hell, you might even have an orgasm. It's been known to happen. ;)

The best advice I can give is, do it more than once. Then you'll really enjoy it. Sky diving is like sex. Do it more and more and you won't only get better at it, you'll enjoy it more and learn a few cool tricks each time.

May 8th at noon.

Also opted for them to film a video during the jump and from the ground as well.

Everyone from work has said they will come and watch. They are more excited than I am it seems.

My best friend was a paratrooper during Vietnam. Training in Texas, people shot at him while descending, bulls chased him, and the army blew the ass off his airplane with an errant artillery shell.

An airplane got into some engine trouble and was doomed to crash. On board were the pilot, a young boy, a scientist, a university professor and an elderly church minister.

Unfortunately, for the five on board, there were only four parachutes.

The pilot said, "We're going down for sure," donned a parachute and jumped.

The scientist said, "I'm working on research that will end hunger forever," put on the second parachute and jumped.

The professor said, "I'm one of the most intelligent persons in the world. My ideas will further all of mankind," strapped on the third parachute and jumped.

The minister said, "Young man, I've lived a good and happy life and I'm not afraid to meet my maker. You take the last parachute. You have your whole life ahead of you."

The young boy said, "It's okay, sir. We can both jump. That very intelligent man just left with my backpack."

The original version of this joke featured Jesse Jackson, the smartest Nigger in the world.

As was mentioned by Slic take the time to go to the school and talk with the person you'll be jumping with.

While gearing up ask questions, just don't get freaked out by the safety briefing. (The failure rate of chutes is actually fairly small.)

Relax, the instructor is going to be the one doing all the work.

Jumping is exciting and more fun than you can imagine.

Oh and about being afraid of heights, in many cases you won't even realise the height you're at, it just doesn't look the same as being on a ladder or on a roof.

The only reason I stopped jumping was because it got too blamed expensive.

NO and NEVER. A friend of mine did, but I won't bother you with the issues. She survived, and that's all you need to know. Good luck and happy jumping! :rose:

Sky diving is one of those activities where you can safely ignore one piece of conventional wisdom...

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!

Lotsa fun ... not.

I'm a bit like Jackluis, 35 or so jumps but one of 'em I was persuaded to take by a Russian fighter pilot.

Props to you! I wish I had the balls, but it may take a while for me to swallow that fear of heights. I know a couple of people who did it though and they loved it. Said there's no rush like it.

I did it a few years ago for charity... going up was scared...going out though I thought I was going to pass out... when the chute went up it was the most amazing thing I had ever done. Everything went beautiful and silent and we just floated through the air enjoying all the views. All fear left at that moment.

I did it!

Strange thing is...I was so pumped about it. I couldn't wait to get up there.

I went up with about 30 others. I was the only one doing a tandem jump in that particular group. So I was gonna go last. All the others belonged to various Jump Groups. I kept wondering when are my nerves gonna set in.

I watched as everyone else went and then.....I saw the opening at the end of the plane....

The plane was still climbing at a rapid pace and walking back to jump was awkward...and about 5 seconds before we jumped by brain started screaming...

"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING??!!"

and on the last two steps all I could say was...Oh my god!

Once I was out of the plane, it was fucking awesome!

And yes...I am already planning my second jump.:D

Why wouldnt you like it? Its part of your death wish.

The only people who feel fear are the folks who know what can happen.
