The wake for all the snakes and pagans who were driven from their homes in Ireland thanks to the religious fanaticism of St. Patrick will be held here. Share a beer and a sad song with us.

Every St Patrick's Day I have a private wake for 36 barrels of genuine Liffey Guinness lost overboard in a storm in the Irish Sea in the early 1960s. I know that we loaded them on the mine-laying racks but we expected to leave them there until we reached Liverpool.

They must have washed ashore somewhere but no one admitted finding them.

I don't think St. Patrick really did drive all the snakes and pagans from Ireland. The last time (only time) I was there, I met all kinds of pagans. Great crack, those pagans, always trying to fool me into thinking they were Christians.

But then a Celt is simply a pagan with a sense of humour, and St. Patrick
stayed away from those types. And as for the snakes, they were all turned into a shillelagh.
