Help!
I've written my story in 'Word' but can't upload it onto the site without it getting mangled. The paragraphs and italics are lost in transit or it becomes hieroglyphics.

I get it...sex is the carrot to entice me into honing my computer skills. Sneaky buggers.

If you're uploading it in word (the file), you shouldn't be able to preview it. It's only when you paste it in that you can see it. Don't paste it if you have italics!! (upload the .doc file)

Or put the italics in by hand using html code < i >Italicized words go here< / i > (without the spaces).

If you are losing your paragraphs breaks? Do you actually have a paragraph end mark (the backward P) in between each paragraph, or do you have your paragraph programmed to do a space after it by itself? Lit doesn't understand the auto spacing, just the paragraph end mark.

I just do a triple click on my story in word, then go to Lit and paste. Never a problem.

Listen to Thee Goat Pig about italics, cuz I don't know how and thought it was never worth learning about.

If you want to send it to my email address, I'll be glad to help with the formatting. I'm at gmail.

Funny, I think the italics and bolds are easy, but the paragraphs sooo confusing, plus it'd take all day with a 25 page word doc to do them all. Or so it seems.

There is actually a find and replace command that finds all italicized and bolded words and adds the nbeccessary coding, but I can't remember exactly what it is.

So, you should maybe be able to do it with paragraph breaks, too?

For paragraphs, you should just be able to insert hard line breaks (2) for each one.

Example:

This is one paragraph.
(LINE BREAK - just hit ENTER)
(LINE BREAK - just hit ENTER)
This is the next paragraph.

Just as the same you'd do on posting a message here.

For the bold and italics, I'd recommend adding the formatting tags as you go, then you can copy and paste the text (with the tags) right into the Story Text field.

Here's a How-To story I wrote awhile back on formatting your story for submission to Literotica:

http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=364905

The basic point is, if you want to bold and/or italicize a word or phrase, simply add the tags while you write the story.

Example:

<i>This is the sentence you want to appear italicized.</i>

And it'll look like this once your story posts:

This is the sentence you want to appear italicized.

If you use this method (adding the tags as you go then copy and paste into the Story Text field) you can preview what the story will look like once its posted and the formatting won't get all wonky.

Good luck and welcome to Lit! :)

Thank you everyone!!

So, double enter for paragraph spacing and <>'s to capture italics.

Okay. One million edits later......

You guys are the best!

Happy New Year!!!!!

I am sooo glad you came along! :rose: I knew someone had written a How To on it, but couldn't remember who.

And Mich ... I hope you have a very good 2010. I know this last year has been a bad one for you.

Make sure you have the closing tags, too (</>) or everything after the bold or italics will appear bold or italic, depending on which tag you used.

Also, what I do when I have italics or bold, while I'm writing, sometimes I'll change it to a different color so I know where it is, then when I'm done with the story, I can go back and add the tags before submitting. Edits aren't fun, but it's all part of writing if you want to be a decent writer.

Happy New year to you.

There are actually a few out there, even the Writers' Resources page on Lit has a few that are much more detailed and better than mine.

Thanks, DH. The last month of 2009 started looking better, so I hope it continues into 2010.

Happy New Year.
