Oh! I wonder.

Occasionally I read the junk mail I get, but mostly I dont. Today, though, one of the employment websites sent me an article about age discrimination at work...yadda, yadda, yadda.

Why do you think employers prefer kiddies to geezers?

And why is it that kiddies dont see their future in how geezers are treated?

Kiddies are naive and easier to push around.

Kiddies don't know shit, never worked before, are cheap and have no clue they are being trained into the "Unemployable" column.

It boils down to money and leverage. Old fucks expect more buck$ for their experience, and are hard to push around

That and younguns will often settle for lower wages to get experience.

But none of this really addresses a larger problem, that of 'job security'. Of course, there is none. period. A bloke works his ass off every day. does good things. For his employer, for his family. gets an awesome reputation as a hard worker - accurate, fast, wears a lil button the mgmt gave him - 'Change agent'. You have problems, you go talk to him. 'Johnny on the spot'. One day he walks in to work, and there's a hush over the entire shop, except that everyone's talking . not about work content, but about 'closed door meetings', bad financials, or some shit. soon, there's an 'all hands mandatory meeting'. Bad news, mgmt ran the company in the ground, only they spin it to sound like the world's falling apart, and 'took them out'. Fuckers. the bottom line: laid off. 'Pack yer shit and get outta here'.

JBJ, I know you'll have the typical conservative spin on this. doesn't matter, this 'lesson's' been beaten into me like 7(seven) times. And unless you've never worked for a wage yourself, you've prolly been there. or perhaps you've been on the other side? trying to spin bad management into something else, something that doesn't sound like 'we fucked up'?

Been there, done that, got laid off. repeat 'til retired...

Yep. That sums it up well.

The problem is: The kiddies dont make enough money to pay the bills that are coming due very soon. Interest on all the debt we have is expected to eat 1/3rd of the Federal budget, entitlements like Medicaid, AFDC, and Medicare will eat about 1/2 of it, and the military will get the rest. Bad times are coming.

I've been on all sides of the issue and know how the games are played. But I dont participate in fucking people over and have always played straight with my employees or the companies I contract with. Being honest and decent arent political traits. All you really have in this world is your reputation.

Out of the mouths of Babes: JBJ, you have unknowingly spouted a universal truth....All you really have in this world is your reputation.....
I ran into one of my former teammates who wanted to know if I needed him on the next assignment. (He was a valuable member of my team ten years ago during a cruise missile development)......I assured him that he would be one of the first guys I called when the next contract is inked......Nonetheless, it says a lot about someone when a former employee wants to work with ya on the next project.....he's not the only former protoge' that I'll employ....

James,

I've worked for companies that were straight with people, and places that weren't. One company hired me, and kept telling their employees how they had great things in the works, then how we had to move them to a new facility and they would do great things and everyone would prosper. We set to work decommissioning all their equipment and putting it all on trucks to the new place. The moment the last machine was loaded, they called an 'all hands mandatory' meeting and laid everyone off except about 8 people. fuckers.

but yea, honest and decent aren't political ideologies. And reputation follows you through life.

I could recount more examples of how shitty <some> businesses can be, but I think most folks here have probably seen 'bad' and instead of dwelling on that, would rather immerse themselves in more positive pursuits.

I was in the business world as long as I was a therapist, and its not a good idea to fuck people over because your infamy always bites your ass and ruins your reputation. People really do talk to each other. And people respect you when you give them enough warning so they can lower the lifeboats and make some plans.

I never hired any companies that screwed their employees or suppliers.

I spent twenty years running my own outfit which specialised in company re-organisations. All too often this involved dismissal of employees sometimes in large numbers. My experience was that it was always best to be as honest as possible and direct as possible, never apologise because it cannot be sincere, and make sure all entitlements are paid out immediately.(not exhaustive but priorities)

In difficult circumstances if people are treated with respect even though the effect off the message may be very harsh they usually respond with respect.

Two major bugbears:-

CEO's who ran a mile , were out of town, interstate, unavailable for comment on dismissal days.

Union leaders who after they have been told that a significant number of jobs are definitely going hold a members meeting and tell the membership that the Union has fought successfully for their jobs!

Why are kids preferred. Direct costs are less. Indirect accruals are also less beacause they tend to move on themselves. They are less likely to realise their manager/company is crap and are therefore less likely to make waves. Weak managers prefer them.

ISHTAT

Good points.

Kids have a place in every organization, I dont want to sell them short or discount their value. Theyre energized and idealistic and ambitious and open-minded.

Geezers, on the other hand, bring experience and maturity and social networks and wisdom acquired from failure to the job. Plus they know all of managements tricks and bullshit.
