Women|: Would you prostitute yourself for science?

If I was single or a single mum and I needed the money, yes. It's no worse than a lot of jobs and frankly I think people get way too worked up over prostition. Women have been receiving gifts in exchange for sex for centuries. This is just more honest about the way in which the money changes hands.

I'd be a miserable prostitute. Nothing exhausts me like having to pretend and flatter, and I'm not good at it, either. It would be an orgy of awkwardness.

I'm pragmatic about it. Everyone has to suck up to their boss. This isn't any different. I'd rather be a prostitute that work in an abbattoir. For me that would be much more soul destroying.

This is one of the reasons I can't work anymore.

Last time a boss told me I had to kiss their ass they ended up short a butt cheek. And I had lunch.

Youre the only one who believes your fable, ROB.

The real story is: ROB was petulant with his mom and she chewed his ass up like a lawnmower.

The truth is JBJ, you make broad assumptions with too little information or your own misconceptions. You jump on the ones you think are weak, which makes you nothing but a bully. Give it a fucking rest. You don't know the people here well enough to pull it off.

Hey, I'm sure there's many a male scientist hoping for a grant who would sell himself out as a gigolo if he thought it would get him the money.

This is just a current buzz because she's so prominent in her field. There's nothing new about attractive women in grad school paying their way through as call girls. I remember a book printed clear back in the '60's, the title of which escapes me at the present. The woman who wrote it put her way through school as a stripper. She admitted that much. What else she may have done is irrelevant. Check out escort service websites. Lots of the girls are in grad school . . . or so they claim. And I'll bet a bunch are. They finish their doctorates and go on to be respectable professors and no one is any the wiser. It This woman hadn't wrote about it, she'd have simply been one more Ph.D. with a 'past'. So?

She sounds reasonable to me. She assessed the situation and used her natural assets to make a better life for herself, and at a thousand a night, she paid her debt to the U and went on.

Good looking can do that.

And was able to start her professional life without being buried under a mountain of debt. I think that's important.

One female grad student in Anthropology doubled the benefits. She worked as a stripper to pay tuition and living expenses and did her doctoral dissertation on the sub-culture of strippers. Thank heavens our research is based on participant observation!

I'd do it for free

Well, part of the hype was because she blogged about her experiences, and put enough details in for people to speculate about her identity but not enough to give herself away. The blog became popular and I believe eventually became a book.

I'm not sure how much Post-Docs are paid in the UK. In the US they make around $30k, plus or minus a little based on cost of living for the city they are in. Aside from undergrad debt, you can go from Bachelor's to Professor without any additional debt int he hard sciences (social scientists on the other hand almost always have to take on additional debt). I had a friend in grad school who basically had a sugar daddy relationship for part of her PhD career. She paid her own rent with her stipend, but he took her out to nice dinners, bought her clothes and occasionally jewlery, and yeah, they had sex with each other, but weren't in a committed relationship.

Um, no thank you. But I will cyber for Swapadvd credits. (Uh, that was a joke... I won't really, well, unless you have a lot... no, nope. Still won't do it. Sorry.)

I did work in a MacDonalds though when I was a student, which I consider far more degrading than prostitution

The English are crazy for their tabloid gossip. And her blog gained traction when she started mentioning celebs and prominent politicians among her clients (no names, just "tv actor" or "MP") and the rags picked up on it, trying to guess who.

As if half of London's upper echelon males didn't see non blogging 'escorts' anyway.

Yes. As a hot girl told me in a bar one night, "When you're a hot girl, sometimes opportunities just open up."

Many years ago I dated a girl in college who worked as an escort: Sex was supposedly not on the agenda, dinner date only, but she was working five nights a week and always carried a dozen rubbers so what's a guy to think?
I shined her on but she wasn't the only gal I knew back then who was using her natural advantage to her advantage.....
Hell, if I could've, I would've! Not with guys, but lonely, horny, rich, women....
That sounds pretty good right now................

This highlights some of my problem with all the debates around prostitution. It always come back to a double standard applied to women. If she was a man, she wouldn't be being criticised, she'd be envied.

Only by other men. The truth is that nothing intimidates the normal male more than a freelance prostitute. She's very much in control of the situation and herself.

I can see how that can be scary for some men. I've met many men (some in my own family ) who are terrified of a self-assured woman in charge of her own. I even have a cousin who married a sub-serviant woman from Korea so that he could be "master" of his house. What he doesn't realize is that she's the one who's really in charge--in her very subtle and pleasant way. If he ever figures it out, he'll shit a blue bean. :D

I remember words of wisdom imparted by my sainted grandmother when I was very young, "Women have few advantages in this world. Be sure to use every one of them." More power to the call girl who commands her own destiny.
