My new boyfriend brought up the idea a few weeks ago that he would be interested in blood play, specifically seeing his blood on me while we're having sex. I'm open to the idea and the thought of how much it turns him on turns me on.

I started by researching the topic, but was disappointed to find most of the writing on the subject is related to blood drinking or period fetish type stuff, which doesn't apply here. Found a few useful pointers on blade safety/blood pathogen awareness, etc. etc. on edge play sites (We're both recently STD/STI tested and both clean) but nothing on the actual nitty gritty of cutting someone safely (if that's not a complete oxymoron) especially since we're after the blood, not the pain and/or controlled fear that seems to be the primary factor in edge play.

I settled on an X-acto type craft knife with a scalpel-shaped blade, and after thorough disinfecting and even wiping his chest down with rubbing alcohol we gave it a whirl....

....and i completely lost my nerve. I used what I *thought* was a considerable amount of pressure, and got what essentially looked like cat scratches or paper cuts. I don't want to have to cut him so deep that he'll need stitches (he says he doesn't care about scars and likes the pain) but after three or four cuts that barely bled at all, we decided to give up on it for now until we do better research on the topic.

I'd like to get an amount of blood but without uncontrollable bleeding or cutting him so deeply that he'd need stitches. I even stocked up on gauze and band-aids and butterfly bandages just in case things got a little out of hand.

Anyone have any advice?

Does he work out? "Scratch him", then he gets his chest pumped, and it should flow like rivers.

You may also get a better result if you "manipulate" the spot after you cut it, as in...cut him then lick it or scratch over it with your nails..or bite right on top of it...

Also different parts of the body with bleed more than others.

Ever get a papercut on a finger? Those fuckers can bleed for a long while and a lot more than one say on the chest. You see blood flows to the limbs but it's harder for it to flow back to those areas. The chest and mid section just don't bleed as much as the head, fingers, or toes.

But if the chest is the area you wish to focas on, then, like HM said, your best bet is to cut him, then get the blood to flow more in the area you cut. Water on a wound will make it bleed more because it does not allow it to clot. You can also try masaging the area since masage helps with blood flow.

I've also been told that exacto knives are very hard to control. Of course I'm more interested in blade play than in blood play so the fact that you are looking to cut where I am not so much nessissarily may be a bit different.

They are. I much prefer an old fashioned straight razor to an Exacto knife anyday.

There are a couple things to consider besides hygiene.

First, if you're cutting the skin of someone who's scared - i.e. adrenaline pumping through veins, heart racing etc - blood flow to the skin and extremities goes to shit. The stress of knowing they're going to be cut diverts blood to the organs and muscles for a fight/flight response. Because of this, it's possible to cut deeper than you planned to in order to draw blood.

You should also invest in some steri-strips as well as dressings so that you can close a wound neatly and avoid trips to the ER.

I also think a scalpel is the best tool.

Often times a craft knife, especially if just bought from the store, won't be sharp enough. You want to get a very good quality knife that will hold it's edge, and get it extremely sharp, to the point where you can shave with it. A sharper knife will slice easier and cause less pain and damage

if he specifically likes to see his blood on you, cut his hands. then he can smear it wherever he wants. just have him hold his hand in warm water for a while to relax the skin and increase the blood flow before you cut. also, the steri strips are a must. although i would advise also a breathable dressing otherwise it won't seal due to too much moisture. if it helps any, i'm medic trained so i have some understanding on the subject.

use disposable surgical scalpels. then you don't have to worry about constant cleaning of your equipment.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into the steri-strips and the different types of blades.

I guess cutting on the hands wouldn't be so bad because it won't take such a large cut and it won't raise any eyebrows (like the 4 long "scratches" across his chest that he has now).

We'll just have to keep experimenting and see what works best.

Thanks, everyone.
