I see no reason to dance around this issue more--it's as devisive as anything being complained about. This is what I believe a fair poll of opinions on the AH status would be. It's slightly unfair, as no definition has been made to what is political or not--and I forsee considerable disagreement over what would be included. (So, if you pick that one, some discussion on what would be considered "political" would be helpful). Another sticky issue with that choice seems moot, however--someone to be moderator, as this wouldn't be a simple task. Darkinaid has expressed willingness, and I, at least, think that should be fine. But if anyone else wants to pick that option and suggest another willing moderator, feel free to do so.

Your poll has options listed that Laurel has not given.

So what? You ARE a control freak, aren't you? :D

Afraid of the opinions you'll receive? Nothing's really started yet. I'm sure Laurel isn't as dogmatic as you are being. Which of these are you afraid of?

I liked the idea mentioned in another thread of an ignore thread option. That way it's a personal choice. I won't use it, but maybe it will make those who are tired of hunting down writerly threads happy *shrug*

Who gave you the authority to post a poll? That job was given by the owners to Crimson and her alone. You call her a control freak, what do you think you're doing with this poll.
I won't get into any arguement about this with you. Delete the poll and wait for the official one made by the owners.

Either status quo or moderated subforum for me.

First is what I want, second is a compromise for what others seem to want but I think would be a less destructive option.

I can't tell if this is serious or Stephen Colbert irony.

We have an ignore option. It doesn't have to be a choice. It's right there. The only thing new being brought up there is that the post of the ignored won't be registered at all even as an index of of existence if you have a person on ignore. That's practically no change from what exists. And even if that were turned on, those who aren't willing to accept any responsibility for what they read and want someone else to do it for them will just continue bitching about any cross-referencing of a post be someone they have on ignore.

I think this poll fairly sets forth the points of the arguments that have been made--and has left open room for complete comment. (The poll is even multiple choice and it doesn't require identification of the voters). What could be more fair?

I know, I know. It doesn't serve the purposes of those bitching about the status quo. Precisely. That's why they'll ignore it or pick it apart.

Why does authority need to be granted? Sorry lance but it still is a free speech forum. The questions are fair. The discussion of 'off topic' is irrelevant if a majority doesn't want a change.

Who needs authority to post a poll here? Look around. Lots of folks post polls. The capability to post a poll is freely given by the site managment (otherwise, how did I get it done?)

I think this poll is fair. What in it scares you?

Oh I know about the ignore option in place. What I mean is the actual thread ignore...don't remember where it was posted but in any case you're right. If people don't exercise that right then the complaints remain the same.

I'm interested to see what happens with this one. Official or not it'll give a good idea of where people stand.

Nothing about it scares me. The job of resolving this issue was given to Crimson to handle, by the owners. If Crimson agreed with your poll, (which she didn't), I would answer it. As such, this poll is worthless in terms doing it. PM Crimson and have it amended to the standards set out by Laurel and then re-post it and I'll gladly fill it out

Oh, it's NOT satirical.

Bummer.

Take a look at the definition of what is permitted in AH, Lance. You haven't changed what it is yet. Just vote and comment on the options--or ignore it and not come anywhere near getting the two-thirds for anything that Laurel has required. Happily, you still have choices here.

I'll bet Laurel is following the threads--and I'll also bet she isn't as dogmatic about this as you think (or wish) she is.

If you think the poll is biased--point to it.

So you weren't trying to be funny. Crim asked Laural a question in a PM and came back with an answer. It's not like Laurel popped in and announced that she was making Crim the junior queen of the AH in charge of resolving this question. It just establishes what the site owners require before they will make changes. No one has to have Crim's permission to start a poll on any topic. The site owners give us the ability to create polls whenever we want. We all get to have our own opinions and express them.

Crimson, none of this answer is aimed at you. I know that you're doing what you think is best. I don't agree with you, but I respect you for the way you're handling it.

It's not a bad poll, SR, but it does slightly promote your bias (writers only posting) and it does feel like you've spit at Crim because you disagree with her position.

I'll wait. :rose:

My bet and my hope.

"Oh sure. Sounds good. Just make sure you get everyone to agree..."

Sounds like something I'd do to avoid having to explain it to someone who doesn't get it to begin with.

You think this is fun, wait until the poll, where we all get to vote. Writing a poll without bias is incredibly difficult. Writing a poll where everyone agrees that there's no bias borders on the impossible, especially when tempers run high.

Considering this is Monday morning, how long is the duration of this poll before any numbers are tossed? And tossed to whom? And will a summary of comments/suggestions be passed along as well?
If not, then, what is the purpose?

Excuse me? It permits multiple choice and full discussion.

What I disagree with Crim on is that she's still stuck back in the "no way" zone--and is being bullheaded. This is the third time this stuff has come up on the board that I can recall. Each time I have flatly said I think the Web site should just erase whatever is offensive in its view. Each time we've had this same yammering which has become just as devisive as anything anyone is complaining about. Each time nothing happens. Crim's approach is dead at the gate. And yet she wants to prolong the nonsense.

I don't mind if something happens--I wouldn't slit my wrist over any of the options being implemented. I'd just like the devisive yammering to stop--until the next time someone creeps it in (which, under current AH rules is their right to do).

If Laurel is watching this, she can implement whatever she wants. She always could and never has. She has set amusingly impossible conditions this time around. If she's going to make any changes, she will.

So far the purpose is satire.

But if the numbers came streaming in for "Change" I'd take notice.

I don't think the majority wants change.

YOU think it's fair. Why doesn't someone else get to start a poll then on what they think is fair? Maybe we can have everyone make up a poll based on what they think is fair. We can flood AH with polls, but the position wasn't yours to take. Personally, I wish this whole fucking mess would just stop, so we can get back to reading and posting comments on issues we're really interested in.

It's just so sad because I really like people on both sides of the issue. I'm a little flabbergasted by some of their positions, but I do like them. :) I'm also impressed with how many have been able to keep their sarcasm under control and their personal attacks to a minimum.

I just wish Reconstruction (US history) was more interesting than this. I'd be nose-deep in a textbook. Actually, I was going to spend my lunchtime reading SR's latest Halloween story, but got completely sidetracked.

Sorry, SR, the story is WAY better than this debate, and is the purpose we're here anyway. I WILL get it read today. Just after I finish the Texas Reconstruction!
