Is the AH Forum a washout?

Jesus.

What the fuck happened to the AH I used to know?

Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh?

How in the hell did we allow political bitching threads to take over?

Fuck you, those who believe their own personal agendas are more important than the whole.

And shame on us for allowing it to continue.

I understand the reminiscing, but its not just your comments that would dishearten someone to want to join into a conversation.

The basic "I miss so and so" and "there are no intelligent people on the AH any more" are the ones that I'm referring to, and as I said, not just from you.

Reminiscing is fine and I appreciate that you (and others) miss some of the people who used to frequent here, but for a thread of this nature to have grown in such a short time with many of the posts being stated as I've indicated above, it makes us "newbies" not want to venture here for fear of being compared to the "intelligent" people of days gone by.

Of course I miss people who are no longer part of Lit. But life goes on. Some who are no longer here have passed away. Some of us are friends on other forums. Some of us communicate by phone. Some of us meet up in Chicago every March.

But my concerns now are with the rancor, with the ten political threads begun each day, having to deal with the constant insulting by a few people who don't even take a position on an issue, they just shout as loudly as possible so they are noticed.

And I'm angry that we the AH people, new and old, have allowed this to happen. Has it crept up slowly, like a fungus? Did it escape our notice until now?

There were many more decent conversations around this place. There were fewer individual member threads (I don't think those are bad, mind you) but there was more collective discussion. There was more support for all of us collectively.

That sort of conversational thread is impossible with poo flingers.

Moving the political threads to a different area is a nice beginning. None of us want moderation, but this is more - organizational.

So the problem is you and anyone who's opinion you don't like. Got it. :D

I'd rather flirt with a rattlesnake!

By my being a 'dick' to you and whoever means disagreeing with you, hell yes! I fucking hate self-righteous snobs and opinionated bullies and I put you and your 'numerous others' in both categories.

You're always saying how you're going where the 'smart people' are, then go and leave the rest of us lesser beings in peace. ;)

But you're not "part of the problem."

Riiiiight.

It doesn't just have to be political threads, Sarah. It's anything the majority agrees is Off-Topic. Unfortunately, the only thing that can be done about the poo-flingers individual posts is to put them on ignore. If the majority would do that, the problem would be taken care of.

Let's put it this way;

If we do not restore the atmosphere of civility that has characterised the AH until recently, newbies may think that dumbshit is the order of the day, and might not ever bloom, spread their wings and display their intelligence, wit and social grace.

:rose:

Yes. Said much more succinctly than I.

:rose:

I liked this place a whole lot better when sex and writing were the mainstays of discourse, and I really started to re-think my decision to stay when it became dominated by political and racist trolls spewing hate on every thread. I don't like to come to a place to argue about that kind of stuff. I like to debate, but the idea of debate should be one of dignified discussion and not rabid poo-flinging.

It's as easy to move individual posts as it is to move threads. And when you take one turd out, the whole thread smells much fresher!

It is as easy, but the individual "turd" posts that are posted in On-Topic threads are likely going to be considered by Laurel as free speech. Like I said, ignore can easily take care of those.

The only question is "move it where?" When you're talking about one post, it's a little harder than a thread turning political.

Best solution would be to split off the post with a bit of context ( if not already included in quotes ) and call it "Moved: Political Discussion of (Topic)"

That may be pushing Laurel's amount of time, though.

I guess that there could just be a Thread of Misfit Posts. Put a link to the original thread into the post, and then drop it on that island.

My guess is after we decide what we want to do, Laurel will decide if the AH needs a moderator to do it. Just a guess but they have quite a bit to do already. Of course, I could be totally wrong, and they'll handle it themselves.

Thank you, Crim, for taking the initiative.

You rock.

You've been hanging out on Craigslist, haven't you?;)

Why should a post that say; 'so-and-so smells like rancid cooking oil' and nothing more than that-- be dignified with a link, that's my question.

It's going to take a hella lotta time at first. Hopefully some of us will learn that their turd posts don't stay around, and will slow down their posting of them. And hopefully as well, the rest of what they post might be read with more respect.

This may sound strange, but I'd really like to thank Sarah for starting this thread. It seems this issue has been festering in a lot of us and I for one am glad something is going to be done about it.
So as much as I'd like to thank Crimson for her help in getting this in progress, it's Sarah I'll tip my hat to and thank her most sincerely.:rose:

How Many Alts Constitute A Majority?

Awww Jimmy, I sure hope you change your ways buddy, looks like poo flinging has gone out of fashion. I'd hate to see you totally ignored and never read your witty reparte.
Feel the Force, Jimmy, leave the Darkside.

If I disagree with you about anything, then in your eyes I am.

To echo your comment earlier: "pot meet kettle" Hi kettle. ;)

Are you the pot?

I would think that a guy would have to be a kettle with that spouty thing 'n all.

I have signatures turned off in my profile preferences. If I need to see someone's profile, I can click on their avatar. :)

Ah! but I'm hoist on the horns of a dilemma there Stella, I love many of the little quotes or mottoes that appear in the signatures, some of the pics too! Some though are a bit like The Elephant Man and have grown large excrescences that overshadow the more delicate features. I would love to banish them by switching signatures off, but then I would lose the good ones. Life is just a bummer!

I try to be restrained myself and limit myself to my gnome (I keep meaning to make him smaller, he's a bit pixillated, very painful!) and a line of text.

It's possible for the forum owners to put restrictions on siggies. Limit the size of images and the number of characters that sort of thing...

I like to think that such restrictions inspire creativity, myself. ;)
