Jounar was talking branding again, I have an idea why but I don't want to get into it here. We have talked about it before so it's nothing new, it's something we have agreed we want to do so I've researched this before we've talked about risks, emotional and physical and have agreed we both are happy with this.

Okay

Now I've seen different ways to do this (if people want to get into that feel free) and we have agreed upon a techecnique. Done

What I haven't found a lot of info on is after care. I want to make sure my brand is as beautiful and long lasting as possible. Obviously the area must be cleaned before hand but there are some different openions on how to keep it clean and maintained afterwords. Do you use aloe? Just daily washings? Burn cream? and so on. So this is really what I'm curious about, for those who have done this kind of thing before.

So, start the open discussion. And feel free to pm me as well. :)

Thankies.

I would think aloe would be good, and Vitamin E also. I haven't done it. Probably won't, but will admit I'm curious about it.

I don't know, but I know cat's been branded. If nothing else comes up in this thread, you could probably search her posts to find out what she did.

I know a couple that did a branding. If I get the chance, I'll ask about aftercare.

I have to admit when I first read this the first image in my mind was the same as the one I get when I hear the Jeff Foxworthy bit on kid's toys, particularly the wood burning kit. "Well that there is the Foxworthy cat; see the circle F brand" *giggles*

But then I remembered what you are refuring to, but I don't remember her mentioning the process. Worth looking into though, thanks.

You were actually the first person that came to mind, but when I thought about it later I remembered you did "cell popping" not branding per se'. What did you treat the puzzle piece with, if anything, and how long did it last?

See what I'm afraid of is that aloe or burn cream might make it heal too well and the overall marks might be lost, but I do want to prevent infection or any nasties like that. Then again, if we have to do it over in a few months that won't be such a big deal. *giggles*

From what I recall, she used a triple anti-biotic cream. That was it. It lasted a good while. I'ts been about a year and you have to know what you're looking for to find it. She marks fairly easily with that sort of thing though.

Still, cell-popping might be a good way to get into it initially.

Branding

frat boys brand a u shape on their upper left arm. It is an African American frat so you may be able to google that and find out how they take care after. It sure does stand up, you can see it thru their workout tee shirts.

as a nurse I would say the big worry would be infection. I'm sure your quite aware of this as you have looking into it. :) Triple antibiotic ointment is great for infection be it also minimizes scaring... which having a lovely scar is the point of branding right? So I would grab some saline and clean the wound with that. you can find it ant any pharmacy its called "wound wash". Then you might want to get some petroleum gauze to cover it, then some dry gauze over that. Just for the first few days keep it covered to avoid infection. Ha well thats my 2 cents :)

From what I've read, branding is giving someone a third degree burn, which kills the skin and will cause scarring, whether you want it to or not. I don't think that putting something on it will make any difference, unless you didn't get the brand hot enough.

Ha well lets hope they dont go that far! 3rd degree involves burning through the subcutaneous down to muscle... not a good idea, I'd go for 2nd degree... ha ha though this is a weird post for a nurse im to to telling people how to heal themselves not hurt. ;)

I would go with this.

I dont know the technical stuff, but I know that usually they wrap your wound with plastic wrap and tell you not to get any water on it. That means dont get it wet in the shower, in the bath, don't even clean it with water. For something like this I imagine you would go quite a while before you can wash the area again.

So, for precise details you could probably go to a tattoo shop and ask them.

Or if you have the money or coverage, you could go to the hospital with it. Can't imagine a safer option then that. Just tell them you fell down some stairs. :D Or that you did it yourself for art sake.

I'm getting strike-branded in the near future and have done a lot of research on aftercare. wench...some of the best people to ask are pro piercers and tattooists. Many of then know branding/scarification as well. I was told to use wound wash, spray aloe/lidocaine (typically sold for sunburns) and keep it covered with sterile gauze for at least the first week. No harsh cleansers, lotions, creams, or anything with scent in it.

I will keep you posted on my healing process, if you wish.

*Sigh* I want to be branded. I'm a bit apprehensive about bringing it up to the domly ones, so I'll be living vicariously through this thread.

That would be very useful. :)

I think that he's thinking of doing this in the next couple of weeks while I'm on vacation, which given my profession would prolly be the best idea.

"Hi, yeah, I fell down some stairs and just happened to land on a hot iron that just happened to be shapped in a "J" and just happened to land perfectly on my tit. How do I help this heal and leave it pretty?"

*giggles*

I'll share pics when it's done. :)

This is something that we have talked about doing for a few years. We have one planned for when we are together, one he will do on me, but this one I will do under his watching eyes.

It's really a huge sign of commitment, for both of us, and a way for me to have a visible sign of his pressence in my life every day. I'm very excited about and happy to do this.

If you do, will you PLEASE take a small camera and record their reactions? Please? I'll even share cookies for the laugh.

I must say wench, I think you're hella brave doing this without his hand to crush in yours. :D

A good person to ask about wound care, b/c that is what a brand is, is a nurse. Skin heals best when it's moist, warm, and not infected. Since it's a burn, you would have to debride the wound, or remove the dead skin so that the new skin can be oxygenated. You can do this by using warm water and running it over the wound. After the wound is clean, I'd apply antibiotic cream to keep in the moisture and to ensure there isn't infection. Burns infect easliy. Finally, I would cover the brand with a thick bandage that traps moisture. Band-aid makes some really big bandages that could cover a large area and seal in moisture really well. That's the best I can explain. Again, if you have any friends who are nurses they could definitely help you out.

From what I remember, we used a liquid antiseptic on the brand while healing, with light gauze over it for a couple of days to protect it a little more. It is best to use something which is going to keep it dry as opposed to creams etc., which can keep it moist and create problems. We didn't go overboard with cleaning and only did it each evening. I have heard some people say they rub salt into the wound to create more of a scar, but then I have also read a lot of stories of screams of pain and passing out when getting branded, so am never sure how mush is truth and how much is fiction. The itching is a real bitch though when it starts to really mend well.
