I was wondering about this, too.

I've sucked my thumb (or pointer finger, for a time) for almost my entire life. When I was in my late teens, I trained myself out of needing it to fall asleep, but even after that I'd wake up to find my thumb in my mouth.

Same here. It seems wrong to me to not suck on something placed in my mouth. If I don't suck on it, it just seems like a foreign object stuck somewhere it's not supposed to be.
