I can't find the old thread, so here's a brand new one:

I'll be away from internet access from Thursday 10th to Sunday 20 September. I should be back sometime on Monday 21st.

Don't do anything I wouldn't do...

That, as the saying goes leaves us a lot of room. ;)

Have a great time, ogg.

Og, my friend, I'm afraid you're going to have to cut your vacation short. Who's going to officiate over the Last Place Award for the Summer Lovin' Contest?

ETA - Nevermind. I saw your post in the other thread.

And what is it you would not do? (just need help in knowing the boundaries)

Take care out there, Og. :D Watch them internet withdrawl symptoms, they're boogers.

Og,
I hope you will be doing something fun. We will miss you around here.

I wouldn't do it in front of the servants, nor do anything that would frighten the horses...

Og

Ah. Thank you. That clears it up. I have no horses or servants...so I'm good. (I can do it all. Does the happy dance... :nana::nana:)

Final visit.

Just checked the car over, topped up the fluids, doing the ceremonial jumping on the suitcase, and we're off to the wilds north of Watford.

Back from Yorkshire. Paris this time

I survived the trip to the wilds of East Yorkshire despite a scare with the car's mechanics.

I deposited my wife at her residential conference, checked into a Travelodge for that night and then did the tourist bit on the Saturday. It was the Heritage Open Day weekend so I saw several places not normally open to the public.

I arrived at the holiday cottage, unloaded the car, and drove two miles to the nearest supermarket for basic supplies. On my return I parked the car and the coolant dumped itself on the road. I couldn't call my auto rescue service because there was no cell phone signal in the village. I had to climb to the top of a hill before I could get a signal.

The rescue service were "very busy" so they sent a contractor with a tow truck. He and I diagnosed a blown head gasket. I was stuck. My auto rescue service could have transported me and the car the 200+ miles back to Kent but that would have meant abandoning my wife a long way from home.

Eventually, on Sunday morning I nursed the car seven miles to the nearest car hire company who were supposed to be open on Sunday, but weren't. They had had a busy Saturday night and had few vehicles available so hadn't bothered to open. I phoned them. Half an hour later I was driving a tiny Ford Fiesta sixty miles through unusual traffic conditions to collect my wife. I had intended to go to the city where her conference was held, look at some tourist sites, have lunch, and then collect her. That sixty miles took 4.5 hours!

Next to the car hire office was a local garage. On Monday I arranged with them to check and repair the car with a maximum I was prepared to pay. They couldn't ring me - no signal, so I returned on the Tuesday morning for the diagnosis. They'd fixed the car. It was a failed thermostat. Cost including parts and labour was seventy pounds. I returned the hire car and drove away in my own car - comfortably.

Tomorrow we're off to Paris for a week. It will be my first visit. We're staying close to a train station. From there it is twenty minutes to Central Paris.

Retirement has some advantages.
