Its Wonderful, Ask Anyone.

It's not wonderful. We know it isn't perfect.

It is much better than no health cover or going bankrupt because of medical bills.

The employer and the employee know exactly how much they will have to pay for National Insurance and that the cost is proportionate to the employee's earnings. There is no weighting or refusal of cover for pre-existing conditions, nor for a life long disability.

Edited for PS: This is what an employee pays for National Insurance:

National Insurance Rates
The following amounts apply for the 2009-10 tax year:
If you're employed
if you earn above £110 a week (the 'earnings threshold') and up to £844 per week you pay 11 per cent of this amount as 'Class 1' NICs
you also pay one per cent of earnings above £844 a week as Class 1 NICs
you will pay a lower amount as an employee if you are a member of your employer's contracted out pension scheme

And apart from the National Health Service you could get:

Benefits that depend on NIC contributions
Your entitlement to the following benefits and/or the amount you can get will depend on your (or in some cases your spouse or civil partner's) NICs:

Contribution based Jobseeker's Allowance (Class 1 NICs only)
Incapacity Benefit (if you can't work for long periods due to illness or injury)
Contribution based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
State Pension
additional State Pension (Class 1 NICs only)
Widowed Parents' Allowance
Bereavement Allowance
Bereavement Payment

When I'm Fascist Ruler of the World I plan a different scheme that will work.

If your malady costs more than the price of a new automobile, the government will pay the tab. If your malady is less than the price of a car, the government will make you a low interest loan, beginning at 0% for the maximum debt, and sliding to say 10% for a small debt. You can then purchase insurance to cover the ususal medical maintenance of physicals, tests, and inexpensive drugs or pay cash and deduct the amount from your taxes.

In February, there was an outcry over the case of Deamonte Driver, a 12-year-old boy who died because his family could not afford private dental treatment.

It was while he was at school one Thursday in February that Deamonte complained of toothache. On the Saturday he had emergency surgery. An abscess had spread to his brain.

A few weeks later he died.

Just from a cursory google search.

Dental abcess is treatable at any emergency room with antibiotics. In fact dentists wont do a root canal until the infection is gone. So the claim is bogus, the parents were ignorant.

I happened to catch Now on PBS yesterday, which profiled a couple living in Las Vegas.

http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/512/index.html

Husband loses job, wife works at a casino but gets no health insurance. She needs double mastectomy - they deplete their savings to pay the $17k for the operation. Now she needs chemo to make sure the cancer doesn't return, but she can't afford it. She can't buy health insurance because of her pre-existing condition. She applies for Medicaid, but her income is $100 over the limit. So, basically, she's waiting to die because she can't afford chemo.

If I was her, I'd probably get myself arrested and jailed, so I could get life saving medical care during incarceration. I wonder how that squares with Ami's penchant for individual freedoms?

Okay, that solution might be a little radical. Perhaps quitting her job so she'd be eligible for Medicaid would be a better option? But then, where would she live? Oh wait, I know! She can just take a trip up to Canada, where, according to R Richard, she can get chemo for free.

Uhhuh. Cause toothache is the best use of the resources in the emergency room. Far better to take up a place there than go to a dentist.

An abcess is a serious medical problem. Dentists arent open 24/7 like Hospitals are. And the treatment for an abcess is an antibiotic.

And the average person can diagnose an abcess from the single symptom of a toothache. They're absolutely likely to rush a kid directly to the emergency room when he says he's got a toothache, rather than assume it's a cavity which can be looked at by the dentist when they have the money.

Ironically enough for the point you're making, if he'd been in England the parents could have phoned the free 24/7 NHS Direct phone line which would have offered them advice and diagnosed the abcess. Or called for an NHS emergency dentist whose services are available 24/7.

Tried several searches but nothing turned up to confirm or document a news item heard today, new Canadian Health Minister says the 'system in Canada is sick, and not working...'

Since I surf back and forth during commercials between CNN, FOX & MSNBC, I can only guess where I might have heard it...;)

edited to add:
"...The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country's health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it...."

apparently not a new item, the above was from R.Richards Thread....

An abcess isnt a cavity, its a pus filled pocket that blossoms thru the gum wall. A cavity is a hole thru the tooth enamel.

The parents could have called ASK A NURSE or a local hospital here, too.

{headdesk} Yes. I'm aware of that. The point I'm making:

A kid comes to you and says, "My tooth hurts."

What's wrong with him?
