Moderation show-and-tell, anyone?

CHARLEY

Moderators yield to pressure from obsessive whiners such as STELLA. people like STELLA will pester a moderator to death, till they give in or quit. STELLA doesnt respect the owner's policy, she wont respect a moderator. So the line has to be drawn with her.
You think? I don't think so.

PS. I have to go soon ... got a prime veal rack on the go, with a wild mushroom, black truffle (yes expensive black truffle) and marsala wine deglaze. Oh, how devine is my life!

Forgive me, please, folks, but may I make a few remarks ?
I'm new to all this and I frankly don't understand a great deal of the allusions to various sexual practices understood by others, but the concept of 'Moderation' is an interesting one.

If there is no post of "Moderator", then self-moderation must be the answer. Now, bearing in mind that the range of "acceptable" behaviour (in terms of language used and 'personal' attacks) is going to be quite wide, at the very least, we need to think a bit harder.
Let me give you an example.

Now, we in the UK have a few jokes of a similar trend, but to me that joke is not "racist" at all, but a very sad (and amusing) comment on the quality of education, with maybe a whack at some specific policies. If the joke was not so specifically American, I'd put it into the Humour thread on a couple of boards I occasionally play in, confident that others would see it my way.

Following one spat by SafeBet (I forget which), I wrote a PM to her and received a very civilised reply (for which, thanks). I don't agree with the tenor at least one reply ("Just go screw yourself," etc), because, apart from being a bit long, it added nothing to the debate and I personally think there are better ways of criticising a comment.

Jokes are a very personal thing. But, to me, the joke is always about someone "outside" the main stream, be it gender, orientation or mental capacity. The joke is not usually intended to "insult & denigrate others" per se, but to highlight a quirk of 'situation'. There was, at one time, a big debate about the 'Jew'. The best people to tell those jokes were themselves ! Similarly, some of the best jokes about non-Caucasian (I don't like this PC-heavy stuff like "persons of colour") are told by themselves (listen to Lenny Henry on the subject).

I could probably think of several other examples, but I'll shut up now.
Thanks for the time.

Hi Handley, and welcome to the AH.

Hi handley,

It may be true that the joke does not offend you. it's also very true that the joke offends a number of other people, some of who are black, and living in America. Not to mention that the policy it makes fun of is non-existent. Some places thought it was worth trying out, and hose places changed their minds very quickly. It's another conservative straw dog, politically speaking, and the fork that straw dog is being poked with is an assumption that the hearers are racist.

Who should have the right to decide the joke is offensive? You, who don't care, or someone who does?

Thank you for putting right, Stella.

I should, perhaps, have mentioned better the wording of some of the criticisms, not just in the Humour thread, but in other places. It's as if the respondent whacks out a few fast words without thinking of the impact or import of those words. For an 'author' should surely think of the words - yes ?

I don't think we need a moderator.
We need to be more aware of "Self-Moderation", perhaps.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here. Does the offended person have an obligation to be "nice" about their anger and hurt?

To whom?

Well, what can I say... perfect timing by me to start this thread and go off the grid for a couple of days.

Got a handful of examples in before the tagents took over, I see. But I've got some catching up to do here if I'm gonna throw in my 2c. Toodles.

From where I stand, moderating anything other than a structured debate is censorship. Plain and simple.

If something offends you, ignore it. If a persons remarks offend you, there's the Iggy button. If a thread's subject matter offends you, don't read it. If you want to call a person out on something, send 'em a PM. What's the point of starting a flame war? To get more people who agree with you to pile on the offender? That's the stuff of playground squabbles.

Let's just put this subject to bed. Free speech is exactly that, free. Anything else in the name of 'fairness' or 'gender neutral' or 'hate speech' is merely censorship wrapped in a cloak of self-rightousness.

I do want to thank safe_bet for quoting DG Hear's Humor thread assessment of her in posting #5. I would have missed it otherwise, because I don't read the humor thread (which, if she were adult, she also could just not do if she doesn't appreciate the humor posted there). However, I'm delighted that assessment was repeated, because it has safe_bet pegged perfectly.

We can add this to the list of examples.

The person who points out that DG's thread is vile is not a vile person.

The person who trolls a thread with numerous huge red, off-topic, posts in an attempt to kill it because their militant martyrdom is offended is far more offensive than the thread they're trying to kill.

Safe bet wound up on my ignore list because her behavior in that that was worthy of moderation. Nothing else in that thread is worthy of moderation, IMHO, despite the fact that there is much there that is offensive, or, even worse, not funny.

Right, WH. Stella, you really are a drudge. How anyone like you can be both what you present yourself to be and Humorless Moral Lizzy with a Hatchet at the same is some sort of inside joke, I think.

Get over yourself. At least stop trying to make everyone else coddle you. Be an adult. Take responsibility for yourself and stop trying to make yourself the decider on what everyone else should be.

And by all means, if this isn't what you want, go someplace else. It's rather amusing that you would only go if your friends went with you and that you didn't get the message when they didn't all start packing.

Oh, and here's that thread once more Stella--just to let you know you don't scare or move or convince me one bit. Safe_bet quoted it, so it must be fine with her to have it quoted.

I have no respect for you whatsoever. I don't give a shit what you say, what you like, or what you do with your sorry pitiful life. I've never seen so much hatred in one human being.

Go seek help, God knows you need it. You don't like what we post? Tough Shit. I can't stand you, so that makes us even. Why do I even say anything to you. I've been on Lit since 2005, and you are the most pitiful person I have ever come across.

Post all you want, I think others are finally seeing your true colors. I'm through answering your posts. You want me to stop posting humor on this thread. Get enough of your friends to tell me how horrible I am and maybe I'll get tired enough of hearing them and stop posting.

As of right now you are the only female piece of garbage I know on the A/H and it has nothing to do with your sexual choices that I don't care to talk with.

To all other gay people on the threads. I really don't care what your sexual orientation is. I've talked to and respect a number of you. It may be hard to fathom after listening to Safe-Bet bitch but I have a number of gay friends, both male and female. I just don't like anybody's sexual orientation shoved down my thoat and told what I have to accept .

Do I post gay and other ethnic jokes? Yes I do. If I find it funny, I post it. If it offends you, don't read it. Or, post a joke about an old guy, that's what I am. I post a lot about old people. It makes me laugh.

So Bet! I would just as soon hope you would stop posting here, but I know stalkers never listen to common sense and expect you back soon.

Cute, SR... (hope you realize just how silly and petty that makes you look... but probably not...)

Weird Harold: Thank you for putting me on your ignore list. My goal in life is to be on the ignore list of EVERY homophobic, bigoted, racist, anti-woman, hate-speech spewing asshat. Two down, too damn many to go!

Weak, safe_bet. You couldn't think of a raunchy sexist jab at the moment?

Hmm, could you please show me where Weird Harold has been a "homophobic, bigoted, racist, anti-woman, hate-speech spewing asshat"? This IS supposed to be the show-and-tell thread, after all.

I'm not saying he is or not. Just that I haven't seen any posts that show that. (But I don't read every post on the AH, as I have a life to live.) From what I can see, he put you on ignore because he thought you were annoying. That's kinda not the same thing.

Apparently referring to her trolling of the humor thread as "militant martyrdom" or disagreeing with her in any way makes me all of those perjoritives.

I have to agree with Liar, even though his pants may be afire. Weird Harold is one of the most temperate posters on the forum. I have seen posts where he criticizes individuals, as we all do, but I have never seen any post of his where he appears to be at all bigoted.

Of course, like Liar, I haven't read all his posts.
