I think he's predicting inflation. Which, most economists will tell you, is not always a bad thing. And under our present circumstances, probably preferable to the alternative.

Of course, it is possible that Obama, like Carter in the 1970s, will be faced with inflation no matter what fiscal policies he follows, because of the rising price of imported oil -- a real external cost to the American economy, completely independent of the money supply and the prime rate and the tax policies and the federal budget deficit, and a cost that will have an inevitable and rapid ripple effect. (Everything we consume is transported to the consumer by petroleum-powered vehicles -- if oil costs more, so does everything else.)

And it might be even worse. The 1970s oil shocks were rooted in cartelization and ephemeral geopolitical conditions. The next round will be rooted in the ineluctable physical limitations of peak oil. There's no political solution to that.
