Just jump in and start talking to people.
Good places to build up some posts are Word Chains (rules are in first post), Last Person to Post Here, The Naked Party Thread, Free Association Thread, Isolated Blurt Thread and several others. Each can give you a chance to get to know some people here and help you feel a little more comfortable.
You might want to use some caution around the political threads, unless you have a tough skin, as they can get a bit rough at times. Feel free to lurk around though and jump in if you have something to say.
Other than that ... Welcome to the AH
Starting a thread like this is a good place to start, but most people give us a little more to work with.

Well, first, you can introduce yourself and let us know a bit more about you.
What brought you here? Is there anything you are more interested in? What trips your triggers in writing, literature or kink?
Geographic location helps some too, if you are comfortable. Naked pics help when posted in a photo thread for some of the more lascivious ladies out there.
But at the same time: Don't post too much, don't give out too much personal information. It can be a fine line but something to start with usually helps. Nero gave good info above so if you follow that, are mostly pleasant and intelligent, you'll be just fine.
