The lists for the annual popularity contest have been put up.

The vote for most influential poet has a guy in there doing quite well who cannot string 2 words together and there are some similar oddities in the prose sections.

It all looks a bit peculiar.

So you met the travel circus who are trying their best to fuck things up. They nominated themselves for several of the awards. They are a joke but they have enough alts between them to make a mockery of things.

Hopefully the poetry people will rally against them but everyone need to get in there and vote. I'm surprised that this is the first thread to even mention the year end awards. This is the writers hangout after all.

Aren't most of the folks around here pretty indifferent to the awards? I've read in more than one thread that many people would rather have an "E" than an "H", right?

I like it when/if I get any letter. I do like the E the best (and especially when I get one out of my main writing category here), because, although it's only the opinion of one person, it's the opinion of the site editor who sees all of the submissions go by, and it is (I hope and trust) wholly based on the story, not a popularity contest of the author or with voting that is easily (and constantly) manipulated like a game. But I like the H's too, and would love to have a W some day (which won't happen, because I don't enter the contests here anymore--they are just too little about the story content). Any of the superlative symbols are nice to see.

I don't read many of the stories (when I have time, I'm writing stories rather than reading them), so I don't feel I could give a fair vote on any of the categories listed here. I did vote on the "most influential writer," but on a tangential criterium from the actual writing--as I don't read the stories of any of those nominated. I voted for Selena Kitt, because in 2008 she took "it" beyond the writing here in providing a publishing house home for a good many of the writers here, thus facilitating their writing to take a step up. I think that's more influential than anything I've heard of any of the other nominees, most of whom have good enough reputations on the basis of popularity. If I read the nominees in that category, I'd look for ones who were able to write well across a wide spectrum and who wrote to produce complete, interesting, fresh/clever-theme stories, not just to meet minimal requirements of the survivor's contest (which I think takes writing development and the story file in the wrong direction here).

Participation in all the contests by AH regulars is down. Look at the waning interest in the last several themed contests and the related threads.

But -- yeah -- everyone needs to head to the contest threads, read, and vote honestly to counteract the army of alt votes from the refugees from reality that nominated themselves.

I'm proud of every H and W I have, especially the Ws awarded during the monthly and year-end contests. Those are less likely to be influenced by friend/foe voting, I feel, and more accurately reflect the merits of the story itself. Not that I discount the award I received for Shock Radio (although others have, and will continue to do so), but the winners that have come in under the wire are more satisfying.

ETA: at the risk of incurring the Les Lumens Curse ( :p ), I'm fairly certain I'll never earn a green E.

Since there's a thread going on the competitions, I'll note that I'm disappointed that individual chapters are still being accepted in nomination for "best story" categories. Chapters aren't stories. I think only complete works should qualify for "best whatever" story. A story's quality can't be judged only on one segment of it.

Agreed, but it seems we're part of a small minority that cares ( and one that unfortunately has a nutcase as the loudest voice in favor of ) :p

Hi Dark, I have a chapter story in the year end contest. Funny it's the first chapter. I have said many times that I prefer to see the complete story judged as one completed story but I don't make those decisions. I'm hoping those that read that chapter will read the rest of the story.

When I write a chapter story I try to have a chapter posted each day. I can see a lot of authors string it out for sometimes months.

Whenever I look at the 'new stories' posted, there seem to be more chapter stories than anything. So, I don't read as much as I use to.
Good luck to all and may the best stories win.
With respect
DG Hear
