I was just wondering (as one is prone to do from time to time) what every thinks about stories that have a chain of threads (e.g. 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1...) all by one author? Specifically the stories that have lots of writers working on them.

I only ask because I always find it kinda hard to add something when I see a big chain of threads of by one person and I'm very concious of the fact that a lot of my stuff ends up with just me adding more threads.

To me, that just means they had a good idea that they ran with in a particular plot direction. I have no problem with people who pick a thread in the middle of the long run, and go another direction.

As an author that often has a long string of threads, I enjoy seeing where someone else will go I've often added to those threads in order to encourage them to write more. Sometimes, the two (or more) of us start a series of back and forth contributions.

Look at the long series of threads in my own Summer Road Trip with SlaveDragon. One of my all-time favorite collaborations.

I have no problem adding on to long chains nor do i mind when people add on to mine.It can have some interesting result and I have to say I do like when my threads go in direction I either didnt know how to right , or into an new direction which i hadnt considered.

I agree fully with this. I like when an author keeps running on a long chain of threads. I also think it is great when someone picks a point in the chain and takes off some other direction. There are so many possible ways to go in CHYOO you can't screw up anything by adding to it.

I concur. In fact, one of your long thread-chains is the reason why I just added a thread to "A Lost Identity".

Besides, a good number of threads in a chain from the same author indicates that he/she is dedicated to that story, which increases the chance of there being a collaboration if you add to it.
And since collaborations is one of the best things about Chyoo...

Well said.

Err...is everyone aware that CHYOO is multiple choice?

Surely it's fine to add a new thread to a story even after someone has made a long chain because the person who's spent their time making that chain of threads is entitled to ignore your thread and write round it?

Maybe I'm just oversimplifying it :)

Isn't it the whole point in chyoo that everyone can add to the story. As long as new additions suit the original idea for the story it should be fine. Atleast if you don't take all the choices of the thread the original writer can still continue his/her story.

I do admire writers that can take their idea and explore it for several threads and if I add to a well defined storyline I try to continue it in a similar style. (Although I don't write often. Or much. )

I really get a kick when I see the message in my mailbox that says someone has added to one of my threads. It's really a huge compliment that another writer has read and enjoyed the story enough to want to add to it.:)

Even if I had plans of my own, I'll usually adjust them so the new thread fits in.

I am a bit cautious about adding to others work though. I know most would welcome it, but a couple of times I have had negative comments saying I ruined a storyline.

Screw the nay-sayers.

I get a kick out of seeing the message from the CHYOO admin as well....it's almost as good as feedback!
